Good simple field sharpener for izula?

I want one of the Fallkniven DC4 sharpeners. Flat and has diamond on one side, ceramic on the other. I think Mistwalker has one that he likes and has posted pics of.

Yep, and that's the one I was just about to suggest. Awesome pocket/pack sharpening "stone".

I've been looking at the sharpeners recently also. I was looking at the DMT Duo Folds, but that Fallkniven DC4 looks like a winner too. I think I'll give that a whirl.

ETA: Well, the DC4's seem to be hard to come by at a reasonable price, so I reckon I'll try out a couple of the Duo Folds (Coarse/Fine & Extra Fine/Extra-Extra Fine), and see about picking up a DC4 later on.

I put a convex edge on my Izula, so I prefer a setup like this.

You can put together a much cheaper setup by gluing a piece of leather or mouse pad to an Altoids tin, and keeping some sandpaper inside.

^^^I second the DMT duo fold...but in a red/green. Haven't needed anything else, best $35 I ever spent.

I've keep a Lansky Pocket sharpener with me. It's quick and has both a carbide and a ceramic side to put a quick edge on while your out in the field.

I like the duofold for field sharpening. Works on all my blades big or small and because it has coarse and fine both I can make even a dinged knife usable.

Fallkniven DC3 is a great small sharpener that works fine.

Highly suggest you do some heavy reading at the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment section.

Some people like freehand, rigs, jigs, sandpaper, etc.

Learn to free hand. Start with a cheap knife and practice, practice, practice.
I can freehand while holding the knife in my hand and moving the stone, in my case a pocket stone(spydeco double stuff) or a sharpmaker rod.
I found this not too hard as i can closely wtach if im going good.

I carry a hunterhoner in my kit. Works pretty good for me. A simple crossed rod design that doesn't take much skill. I'm not to good freehand yet

Another vote for the DC4 :thumbup:...got one myself and it handles all my freehand sharpening at home and in the woods.

Well I guess because I have been using one for over 40 years.!! A Norton India combination stone. Grey&orange fine side. I've tryed jezz 40-50 different carryable stones and whatnot. But that good old Norton still sharpens *Every kind of Blade* I ever needed an edge on. So far, aside from grinders, its the very best stone I've ever used. And also a 30 some year old scharade honesteel. I have alot of people bringing me blades to put an edge on and every kind of steel I can think of, and thAT 40 YEAR OLD stone still even looks new. Their mostly found in woodworking stores to sharpen very hard plane blades and the like. Don't know why the sports stores arn't selling them? One guy at a gun show in Boise ID. took about 50-60 of them there, and asked if *Anyone* had a need for an edge on their blades. He sold out before 4 hours into the show. They Kinda speaks for themselfs. Enjoy. edgy :thumbup:

you know this thread is making me want to buy a stone, just after I got rid of 'em..

the only downside to stones is time, but again my downfall with a belt sander is if I needed to sharpen my knife in a dire-straight situation it would take me forever as the memory on my blades are convexed by my powered madness..

the fun it use to be to stand there for 20 mins or so sharpening one knife..

I can sharpen 5 knives in 20 mins now, convexed, hair shaving ... etc, etc..

anyone sharpen a convexed edge with a portable packed sharpener??

I'm thinking portable mousepad/paper.. ??
