Hello, I'm having trouble finding a decent source for 8-9oz. leather. I want to try my hand at sheath making (somthing besides Kydex). I found some at Texas Knifemakers Supply but I'm betting it can be found cheaper or in larger peices.
Anyone willing to give up a good source? Much appriciated.

Try the Tandy Leather Company. They have leather of every description, leatherworking tools, saddle-making supplies, and every other leather making item you could need.

Take Sandy's advise. Everytime I have compromised and bought from Tandy I have regretted it later. Their prices are higher and quality control does not exist with Tandy. Siegel's has always delivered to my expectations.

Before they opened a Tandy Leather store near me I bought from this guy on ebay

http://stores.ebay.com/Dangerous-Threads_W0QQsspagenameZL2QQtZkm

He sells leather in large pieces and he sells scraps (from his shop). I bought a package of 10 sq. ft. of scrap veg tanned leather for $20. I was very pleased. Basically I used this material to learn. I made a bunch of sheaths, wet molded some things like cell phone cases and cartridge cases. This is a good way to start. The leather is inexpensive so you won't feel bad trying something out and finding out it doesn't work. or isn't practical.

This is the page of his auctions for veg tanned leather, (most have buy it now so you don't have to wait)

Wow.... Thanks guys, thats alot of info, I'll check those out.
Blgoode, I have read that shoulders are good for sheath making but you would know better than I, If you suggest another, let me know.

You guys started this...and I had some questions I thought too dopey to ask. But since they kinda fall under this category, and would be relativly on topic here I go...

I'm not much of a leather worker. I have some basic experience with the Tandy leather kits from my childhood making things like wallets and key holders and stuff, but with my adult obsessions with knives, guns, etc...leather working seems a decent thing to progress to.

So leather would be the easiest thing to find...but I'm from Texas. We've got snakes here, and by god...we use em. I could probably find rattlesnake skins free if I asked around enough cause I'm sure somebody I know will kill one every week this summer.

What about more exotic stuff. Things that don't qualify as leather per se? Anyone know where a person might drum up things like rayskin, exotic snakes? I think I'd like a bealt sheath made from the hood of a common indian cobra with the beautiful eyed V pattern. Water mocasin skin? These things HAVE to be available somewhere I just wonder where. If ostrich skin can be had for boots...why not snakes and other critters for other purposes?

No kidding? Wish they had a website...I might definately have to contact these folks as seeing DDR inlaying rayskin in his knives has peaked my interest in exotic skins and inlays. In fact I'm thinking an Australian Cobra inlay in an indian cobra hood sheath. Now that would be nice...Darrel you listening? If I can find this stuff you may be in for some new stuff to try
