Thinking of doing a "survival movie" day for some friends, can anyone reccomend good survival type movies? here are some of what i consider "survival" type movies.

Rambo 1-25
The Hunted (dont flame me its not great but its an example)
Pitch Black (kinda)
Alien/Aliens etc
The Edge
The Hunted (the one with Ice T)

Anyone care to chime in with some reccomendations?

Dersu Uzala. A story of a early 20th century Russian surveyor team taking on a native as a guide. The team comes to respect and depend on his knowledge and experience. In Russian with English subtitles.

That's an Akria Kurosawa picture, no? I can't believe someone else has seen it.

I am particularly haunted by the scene of the "trained" Russian military engineer just about dying in the Siberian cold and giving up (despite his military survival training), and the whimsical little hunter guide (Dersu) calmly but quickly takes the engineer's surveying equipment and builds the most amazing shelter out of it, saving their lives.

It also shows how the poor guide's life is destroyed by living in Moscow, to where the grateful engineer brings him.

If I recall, there's a pretty funny scene involving him doing tracking. He points to some footprints on the ground, and announces with total certainty that these tracks were made by an 80-year-old Chinese man, who has one leg slightly shorter than the other.

The amazed engineer asks how he could possibly know all this from a couple of boot prints.

Dersu replies, "Because I know him. He lives right over there."

I would say "Steel Magnolias" If you can survive that movie.... you have it made:D

I still like:

First Blood
The Edge

SnowWalker
The Edge
DeathHunt

There's another that's based on a small band of Inuit, but I can't remember the title. Something like The Runner or Running man? Good movie though.

To end all wars:Keifer sutherland,Robert carlyle as pows in burma during WW2.An exelent film that few have heard about(at least around here)
Night of the living dead,Dawn of the dead ect.Not reality based(yet) but an example of adaptation in extreme conditions.

The movie with Ice T is called "Surviving the Game", Not "the hunted", AFAIK.

The Trigger Effect - http://imdb.com/title/tt0117965/

"How tenuous is man's hold on civilization when survival becomes an issue? When the lights go out and stay out for several days, suburbanites Matthew and Annie learn the hard way that man is 'by nature' a predatory creature."

Southern Comfort - http://imdb.com/title/tt0083111/

"A squad of National Guards on an isolated weekend exercise in the Louisiana swamp must fight for their lives when they anger local Cajuns by stealing their canoes. Without live ammunition and in a strange country, their experience begins to mirror the Vietnam experience."

Okay, probably not the best survival examples but I've been drinking scotch so I don't care...Whitewater Summer (Kevin Bacon as an Outward Bound type instructor) and Deliverance (squeel like a pig, boy!).

Ok two more added to my list, those look pretty good, especially the first one.

"Man In The Wilderness" with Richard Harris as mountain man mauled by a bear and left for dead by companions. Based on real life experiance of Hugh Glass. In the movie Harris's charater is named Bass.

"28 Days Later" sorry, a zombie flick - but probably one of the better ones tho

"Red Scorpion" cheese action - Dolph Lundgren as a Spetz dude that gets trained by a native.

"Dog Soldiers" werewolves vs. British Marines on training exercise. Actually, a fairly decent flick. Entertaining!
