Oh, it is. I read the book first, then saw the movie. The "Crow" refered to in the title was the NA tribe, the Crow Indians (actually Absaroka or Apsaalooke...Sparrowhawk in correct language). He had a long running private war with them when they killed his Flat Head Indian wife (Salish). It took place in the 1830-40 time period in the Rockies. Filmed in Utah and based loosely on a real figure, John Johnston (1824-1900). Redford played the lead, Will Geer was a supporting charactor, his Mentor, Bear Claw Chris Lapp. The movie (and book Crow Killer) was based on Vardis Fisher's novel Mountain Man. Fisher was the WPA director of the Idaho Writer's Project. Note the Salish song during the wedding ceremony. It is a gaff. The song is their funeral song.
