Hey guys. I was wondering if you could help me decide on a good Survival knife. The following is a list of some things I'm looking for in this particular blade:

- Between 6" and 9" long.
- Longer Handle.
- Carbon Steel (Ex. 1095, 5160, A2...)
- 1/4" thick
- Either Micarta, or Wood Handle Scales.
- Full, visible tang (No taper)
- Decent sheath (Leather, or Kydex... No plastic; such as CS's Secure-Ex)
- Fairly heavy (Do not care about weight... I'm not one to freak over a 10oz woods knife, or a 5-7oz EDC; for example, Zero Tolerance)
- Flat, Sabre, Or convex grind.

I already have some Cold Steels, and will never buy any more because of their terrible Customer Service. I also have All of the Becker blades, and i find the longer ones too light.

You might take a look at some of busse's knives for the thicker longer blades. Esee5 is a bit short but certainly heavy enough. Lot of custom makers could make just what you want as well.

I'm trying out a busse team gemini right now, other than it having a real thick edge I like it. Working on thinning the edge down alittle so its more useful right now. It should make a good woods knife.

Check out the Swamp Rat Rodent 9, it just came out if I understand correctly. Its a 9in blade, 1/4in thick, black micarta handles, FFG. Sounds like it would be right up your alley.

Other than that, I'm not too sure what else might fit other than what cricketdave has mentioned about busse.

It sounds like it is time for you to upgrade into the Bussekin blades - Busse Combat, Swamp Rat, or Scrap Yard. All have offerings currently available fitting your requirements although none come with sheaths, you purchase one separately from whomever you wish. Also, do not be deterred by 3/16" thick SR101 or INFI or SR77 - each excels in specific areas but ALL will outperform 1095 toughness. The increase in price reflects well the increase in quality of materials and workmanship.
All are USA manufacture and carry the Busse Warranty (lifetime, no questions asked, no mockery).

There also a number of custom makers with offerings that fit the bill.

What would make this knife any different than any of the ones discussed in your earlier "Deployment Knife" thread? Whatever you decided in that thread...use that. If you can "survive" in the military with it, you can "survive" in the woods with it. And vice versa.

Thanks, Dave! I'm really digging that Gemini. How much did that beauty run you... and do you know any good places to pick one up? Sorry, I don't already know, but I'm fairly new to the Busse side of things. :)

True, but I dont see a Benchmade Nimravus being a good woods blade? Do you? ... In fact, I've tried using "tactical" blades, Such as my AMAZING Cold Steel GI Tanto (the only CS I really like) as a woods/camp knife, and needless to say, it did a poor job ( and although the GI Tanto is not a good woods blade, it is my main throwing knife, which, it almost seems, is its second-nature.)

I say, get you a BK2 & a custom made sheath if the stock one does'nt do it for ya. But really, there are soooo many good choices out there.

On the less expensive side (but that damn sure don't mean they ain't good) : Beckers/Ka-Bar/Ontario ect....

On the pricey side: Busse/SwampRat/ScrapYard/Tops ect...

BK&T BK7 or BK9. They have grivory scales but micarta ones are available. Or an ESEE Junglas.
Heh, you guys need to pay closer attention to what you're reading. None of the blades you guys mention meet his requirements and he said he has all the Beckers. :D

To the OP, can't help you. I can't see the need for large chopper knives when a light thin machete will out cut them all day long. Maybe try a small kukri?

If the AMAZING GI Tanto isn't a good woods "survival" knife, then it isn't going to be a good military "survival" knife (unless you are planning on throwing it at the bad guys).

Functional is functional wherever you are "surviving" with it. If something is not a good "woods" blade, but a good "tactical" blade (or vice versa), then its not a really good "anything" blade, in my book.

The top knife would work.;)

1/4" thick 1095 steel at 59-60 RC. Blade is 9" long, handle 6". 1 pound 5 ounces for weight. Canvas micarta scales, and a kydex sheath.
It's also made of American materials in America by genuine Americans, so buy guilt-free if you're an American.
Over-priced at $300, but it made for a good day of trading at the gun store.:)

Thinking I'll lose the lanyard off it though. Nice that it comes with one, but I don't need it.

Thanks, about the only place to get one is on the exchange here. They come up for sale fairly often usually just under 400 bucks.

you might also look at grayman knives those are thick heavy duty suckers and very well made too.

I have an Ontario version machete that I really enjoy, but I like to be able to carry the darn thing! :D And I also like to be able to botton wood (Hickory, Oak...).

WOW! That sure is a purty blade! :D it would fit my role fairly well. Looks cool too.

7" blade
5.75" handle

To tell you the truth, I had this in my shopping cart on TOPS's website, but turned away after watching Equip 2 Endure's review on it. Although, I am getting the new USMC Combat knife from the folks at TOPS
