Got a 112 on the way

Yes, Stelth is correct . Finger grooves appeared on 3 dot 112's then later on 4 dot 110's . One collector has told me 3 dot finger groove 110's do exist . DM

Thanks. I had seen only one other like that, some time ago. I passed on that one, since I was concerned someone was doing home-grown blade swaps. I've never seen a FG 3-dot 110, but if I do i won't pass on that one...

Is 440C preferred over the newer steel for some reason or is it just collectable because it's no longer made?

I looked the box over pretty well, and it doesn't look like it damaged it at all. In fact it was never glued together, only tabs that fit in each other. It goes back together as if it were never folded. I'm leaving it flat in a Ziplock to keep it from getting crushed. Somebody correct me if I am wrong on this and doing damage.

As far as 440C goes, you don't see too many quality custom knives made from 420HC. ;)

A really nice find! Finger groove came out in 1980 [I think!] with a brown sheath..

Well, I have a 2 dot 112 on the way now. It is definitely more beat on than the first one though. I'll post pics when it gets here.

Well......now that you mention it, I'm sure there was one on the Bay ending tonight or maybe today.....but darned if I can find it now.

Where did that darn thing go?

No, that's not the one I saw, although it could be a three-dot, really hard to tell. Is there no way to copy those pics and enlarge them a little?

The one I saw was a definite three-dot FG, in better shape and had a nice brown sheath.

Well.......congrats to somebody.......I totally lost track of this one.

But.....it would appear to verify, with pictures, that they do exist.

So, Dave Martin.....looks like your mysterious collector was correct.

:)

Yes, sometimes I have time to check all the Buck Knives listed. Most of the time I don't.

This time I did and then was busy and lost track of that one because I was searching "112" and it wasn't listed that way. By the time I found it again.....it was done.

So it goes.....maybe next time. That one is not one of my priorities, but I'd have bid anyway.

Thanks......LOL.....I was feeling kind of sensitive at that point.

That's what comes of looking at too many knives and NOT paying attention as well as I should have.

I knew it was a 112 three-dotter........I knew it was a finger-groove........it just never quite clicked in that.....hey, this is a 112 three-dotter AND a finger-groove and therefore I may never see another nice one at a decent price.

Oh well......it's the hunting that's fun.

When you finally get a good one you just have to start looking for something else anyway.

Glad for this thread, though. Nice to learn more about the 112s.

The next one came today, it is in pretty good shape functionally, but scratched and scarred in the surface. Blade almost full and not overly sharpened. It's action is rough and gritty, but is tight and has a good strong snap. It should clean up real nice.

Any suggestions on subduing the name scratched in th the wood? I figured I'd try burnishing it first, but if that doesn't work, try light sanding and oiling the wood back down real well.

I won't have any concerns about making this one a user. ;)

I got it cleaned up, it came out real nice. I usually like to leave the patina best I can, but it still has character marks, and there was not much chance of hurting it in the condition it was in.

I did get the name/letters smoothed out, and it also sharpened up quite well.
