Hey there Beckerheads!

Went hunting with my buddy and his cousin at his farm. I had gone out twice this season with no luck, so I was hopeful this would be my day. We started at 5:30am up in some tree stands. It was cold and raining on us for the first couple hours. We figured the deer were most likely bedding down so we went walking.

We stalked for most of the morning. We were walking about 100 yards apart, my buddy up top, me mid, and his cousin walking the bottom at the creek. It was pretty thick with pines and brush, which deer love so we figured we'd come across some. Here's a pic of the area I was walking through:

I heard what sounded like buffalo running at me hahaha. I guess my buddy had come across some deer and they were evading him (no shots fired). I looked to my left and could not get a visual on my friend and looked down the ravine and could not get a visual on his cousin so I decided this was going to be a no shoot for me. I tucked my rifle close and hid behind a tree to let them barrel past me. It was so intense to have 6 full grown deer run past you full bore at about 7 yards. It was an experience I'll never forget and was the biggest rush I had hunting that day.

His cousin was actually also behind a tree at the bottom of the ravine by the creek and popped and took 2 safe shots hitting a doe right through the heart and dropping her on the spot. He was struggling to field dress the deer with his knives because they were dull and weak. I kept offering my BK2 but I think his ego was not allowing him to listen. Finally said "dammit, let me see that beast". After slicing through everything with ease, including the pelvis, he was impressed.

Fog had come in very strong and we were reaching about 1pm when we had finally drug his deer out of the woods got it back to his house to skin and butcher. We decided to eat and wait out the fog. The fog never subsided so we just took care of his deer and decided to call it a day. At around 3:45 we head out to my buddies house to pack up for the day. We were driving his polaris down the logging trails with me sitting on the back and my buddy says "Joe! Deer. This is your shot bud. Get her! She's huge!" Well for the life of me I could not see her in the thicket. He finally used his finger to point her out. I jumped off the back of the polaris, popped my lens caps, shouldered the rifle, put her in the cross hairs, and flicked off the safety. Her head to top of shoulders were a clear shot. I aimed dead center neck for a quick clean kill (preserving all meat as well) and let the shot break. She dropped dead like a sack of rocks. Then we see another doe right behind her that became visible after she fell and my buddy took her. We had all gotten deer and it was a great hunt.

Here's some pics of my hugantic doe and the Becker doing work (it field dressed all 3 deer this day):

Needless to say, both my buddy and his cousin said they are ordering some BK2s after seeing how well it held and edge on tough tasks.

Well, so much for the supposed blade being too thick for a capable field dressing knife:)
I can get my BK2 very sharp.
Congrats!

Great work and looks like a fun day, sorry to sy or
Season is over and I'm eating tag soup. My BK2 have yet to taste blood, but is always with me when in the field.

Good job, but you forgot to tell us about your rifle setup!! Looks like a heavy one with the barrel that's on it, but that's about all I can tell.

So he was hunting from it. Getting off before the shot does not make it legal. You can't drive around logging roads until you find game then get off and shoot them. That is considered hunting from a vehicle which is illegal in most states. I am not familiar with PA's game laws so was asking the question if it was a legal activity in that state.

These come in handy its a Lansky dog bone about $8

I see where you are coming from. They way he wrote it would have been legal here. As long as you are out/off of the vehicle you are good to go here. Driving around on established trails looking for deer is fairly commonplace and legal here, but frowned upon by many people.

The bk2 is pretty capable of a lot of different knife tasks. It wouldn't be my first choice foe field dressing, but looks like it did the job well!!

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I appreciate it.

psyops,
The sheath has done great in the field for both turkey and deer season. I have given it a pretty rough shake with all the snow and rain it's endured, but it is rock solid.

ac700,
Hey there. I use a Remington 700 SPS Tac with a 20" bull barrel. I put a HS Precision stock on it (hated the factory one) and installed a Karsten Cheek Rest. The rail is a Nightforce 20MOA, with SS 30mm rings, a USO anti-cant level, and the scope is a Vortex PST 4-16 FFP MOA/MOA.

fargo,
Hey there. I'll assume that you are asking an honest question and aren't being "that guy" so I'll answer you. In now way did I say we were looking for deer off the polaris. We had packed up for the day and decided we were going to head home as stated in the original post (reread for reference). We were driving logging trails from his cousin's property where we had just skinned his deer and were heading to my buddy's to jump in his truck and go home. In no way was this planned so don't imply or add you own misinterpretations to my words. I walked more miles than I care to recall that day.

It was explained to me in the past, and even this past spring when I took my young brother-in-law to get his hunter's safety certification, that you can NOT hunt from any type of vehicle, unless handicapped and pre-approved. However, when someone had asked if they could drive up to their stand and get out and then hunt they said "yes". They said that as long as you "do not hunt from the actual vehicle and are not actively attempting to push or drive animals with the vehicle then it is legal to get off, move away from it, and fire on said animal."

In fact, we brought mine to a local butcher to get some special jerky made and their was two game commission officers there inspecting some deer that a farmer had used farm tags on. The one complimented me on the size of the doe and I told him the story. He said congrats and didn't scold me so I am assuming I did not break the law in any way, shape, or form. I will research it further to make sure I'm bending any rules since I really do try to be of strong moral character.

Nice job! She's a big doe, for sure. I hope you cooked up some backstraps, pronto!

cchu,
I'll check into that sharpener.

mrn8,
Thank you! I'm looking forward to many meals from this young lady (probably actually an old lady).

I use mine alot the edges are for sharpening serrations, the little groove on the one side sharpens fish hook and its compact enough to slip into anywhere, here is one I keep at work.

You guys and your deer related morals crack me up.

Roaming around and hunting for a deer is frowned upon

But throwing some corn on the ground and waiting up in a heated box stands until one comes to your eat your bait is the only holy action
