Got a deer used my BK2 to field dress

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I appreciate it.

psyops,
The sheath has done great in the field for both turkey and deer season. I have given it a pretty rough shake with all the snow and rain it's endured, but it is rock solid.

ac700,
Hey there. I use a Remington 700 SPS Tac with a 20" bull barrel. I put a HS Precision stock on it (hated the factory one) and installed a Karsten Cheek Rest. The rail is a Nightforce 20MOA, with SS 30mm rings, a USO anti-cant level, and the scope is a Vortex PST 4-16 FFP MOA/MOA.

fargo,
Hey there. I'll assume that you are asking an honest question and aren't being "that guy" so I'll answer you. In now way did I say we were looking for deer off the polaris. We had packed up for the day and decided we were going to head home as stated in the original post (reread for reference). We were driving logging trails from his cousin's property where we had just skinned his deer and were heading to my buddy's to jump in his truck and go home. In no way was this planned so don't imply or add you own misinterpretations to my words. I walked more miles than I care to recall that day.

It was explained to me in the past, and even this past spring when I took my young brother-in-law to get his hunter's safety certification, that you can NOT hunt from any type of vehicle, unless handicapped and pre-approved. However, when someone had asked if they could drive up to their stand and get out and then hunt they said "yes". They said that as long as you "do not hunt from the actual vehicle and are not actively attempting to push or drive animals with the vehicle then it is legal to get off, move away from it, and fire on said animal."

In fact, we brought mine to a local butcher to get some special jerky made and their was two game commission officers there inspecting some deer that a farmer had used farm tags on. The one complimented me on the size of the doe and I told him the story. He said congrats and didn't scold me so I am assuming I did not break the law in any way, shape, or form. I will research it further to make sure I'm bending any rules since I really do try to be of strong moral character.

I read just fine thank you and did not apply my own interpretations to your words. I would recommend reviewing
2301(a)(1) and 2308(a)(7). It makes no difference that your intent was to go home or how far you had previously walked during the day.

You guys and your deer related morals crack me up.

Roaming around and hunting for a deer is frowned upon

But throwing some corn on the ground and waiting up in a heated box stands until one comes to your eat your bait is the only holy action

Has nothing to do with morals or what some form or style of hunting is superior to others. Only the legality of the method in the state you are hunting in. And yes some laws and regulations are just plain dumb, however they are still in place.

Hey Fargo, how about you give him a break. He isn't in your state, he wasn't hunting from the Polaris, he happened across a doe, and you're giving him more grief than those responsible for keeping the illegal behavior in check. It was a nice kill that got him quite a bit of good looking meat.

Fargo,
I'll check those sections out when I'm home later. Thank you.

Chameleon,
Thanks man. I appreciate the positivity.

*note* I will not discuss the legality of this any further and derail the thread. Game commission said I'm fine so I'm fine. Done with that discussion.

I use mine alot the edges are for sharpening serrations, the little groove on the one side sharpens fish hook and its compact enough to slip into anywhere, ...

That little groove is also ideal for sharpening darts!

Your right and I apologize. I should have just congratulated him on the deer and said nothing else so that next time he finds himself in that situation and a game warden sees him get out of a utv and shoots a deer he gets a fine, loses hprivileges for several years and loses that nice rifle.
Not trying to give grief just a heads up.
Now I understand he was not pursuing deer from the utv but happened across one. However from a LE perspective- the deer was spotted from the utv, he got out and I would bet he moved less than 20 yards from the utv and shot the deer. By definition he was hunting from the utv. His intent when he entered the utv has no relevance since no culpability is necessary.
He did not drive to a stand, get out climb up then shoot a deer. He did not drive up a ridge, get off walk 100 yards then jump a deer and shoot it. The deer was spotted and shot from the utv.
To the OP no Ill will intended. Just no need in getting yourself in hot water over something such as that.

You can always come to Texas and hunt pigs from a helicopter with a silenced rifle...

On topic: nice to see somebody getting the BK2 sharp

On side topic: I use an EZE Lap model S diamond rod, it does all the same stuff but is the size and shape of a ball point ink pen. Aussi, its my only piece of sharpening equipment next to an inherited Arkansas stone and old leather belt.

Off Topic, every member of my family carries no less than a .357 sidearm, sometimes scoped, in the event that a deer is scared up en route to the stand. Never thought of it as "hunting from a vehicle" more along the lines of "seizing the opportunity"

Lee,
Dude I have watched some amazing shows on the pig hunting ya'll do! Wicked cool.

stv,
My Bk2 has gotten wicked sharp now that I'm decent at sharpening ha! It holds its edge extremely well. I was pleased it dressed 3 deer with ease.

I hope you dont get your knowledge of Louisiana from television.. lol

What angle are you using. My 2 is a dang brick.

I actually just convexed last night, 1st attempt ever and it happened really fast but its still not sharp as I use skateboarders grip tape and a folded up pair of underwear lol. I have nothing finer grained to create an "edge", so its just convexed and rough..

With anything else I am completely respectful.. I only eat what I kill and respect the animals I am hunting, don't over harvest, don't just shoot anything that comes along.. but those damn pigs are a whole different story. They will literally destroy a piece of property in a matter of hours..

edit: and I am not trying to derail your thread here.. that is a really nice looking doe, makes me hungry for a big pot of venison chile! BK2 is a great choice for breaking the pelvic bone and it sounds like it was great all around for skinning.. I am hoping to get a deer or two in the next couple weeks and try out my BK15 on the processing duties.. I know it will do great, i am just excited to see how good it does.

It is a great day when every hunter in the party gets to bring meat home........ You all made a good job of it........

I am so glad your Two worked so well for you....... Thanks for the post and the pix.....

Congratulations.......

Ethan

Nice haul! Not shocked at all regarding the knife performance.

Fargo.... If your intentions are to be perceived as looking out for Op's best interest, state your point once and be done with it. The legality of his harvest was not the point of the thread. You seem hellbent to derail his post. Your relentless effort is now ill recieved. That is all.

stv,
Angle? HA! I have no clue. I do it by hand with stones and leather. I always just hold the angle consistent. I swear it's sharp though......serious hahaha.

Lee,
I watched a show on pigs and was amazed at the devastation they can do over a single night. I can't remember the name of the show but it was on National Geographic.

worldwood,
Thank you sir!

Mr. Becker,
Thank you for the kind response. Yes, the 2 was a beast. I did not feel it was overly large or bulky. It cut with finesse when needed and made its way through bone with brute force when necessary. Plus, it's a handsome blade.

bush-haus,
Thank you very much sir. I have all the meat home and in the freezer. It was a GREAT haul. I am giving about a quarter of it away to others right off the bat. There are others that we know that aren't as fortunate as us and we wanted to share the meat. I plan on having neighbors over this weekend and cooking up a bunch of the steaks and a couple of the backstraps. It's almost Christmas, got to have the spirit of giving hahaha.

Here's a pic of the meat after I gave some of the steaks and ground away before sorting and freezing:

Im in PA too... Looks like we need to have a party LMAO I havent had venison in years and that looks delicious!!!!

I need to go shoot a doe. My oldest got one but with 4 boys one wont last all year lol!

worldwood,
I ate some last night (gotta get the first taste!) and it was delicious! Side note, I love PA!

Psyop,
That's awesome that you and your boys hunt, 1 deer will definitely not last you guys long. My son is only 5 but he asks me, all the time, about hunting when he's older.
