To be quite honest im floored.

Ive been waiting for this knife since it was announced. i kind of imagined it as a kind of wilderness tough multitool, now myself and every other soldier i know carries a mutlitool and usually 2 more knives at least a folder and usually a fixed blade, but what about when im just doing my daily rounds as i go about my life when not on duty. i dont particurarily like to carry a multitool on my belt and a folder. about the time the HEST was announced i adopted the practice of carrying an ontario RAT-3 in my pocket and was swayed by the virtues of the pocket carry fixed blade.

Long story short the HEST seemed to me from the initial pictures like it was the perfect solution for someone like me, small enough to be easily concealed in DC but still plenty sturdy. Also unlike some people i have heard that wonder why anyone would put a bottle opener on a knife i have this to say: When im not busy survivng in the woods or fighting a war in a third world country (FYI almost all of my life :) ) i like to drink a good beer and as far as im concerned they dont make a good beer with a twist top, seeing as how a knife is my constant companion why shouldnt it be able to open my beer?

So fast forward past months of waiting and lots of checking the forums and knife dealers for the HEST to appear i finnally had the opportunity to purchase one. so then i waited even more for it to arrive.

Finally i now have the HEST in my hand and it is almost impossible for me to put down. I have yet to put it through its paces but so far i have absolutley no fault with the HEST which is unusual as im a very picky individual. So here is a short list of the things i like about the HEST that makes it stick out to me.

1) The size is perfect plenty of blade and a great handle which fits my medium sized hands with plenty of extra purchase.
2) personally i like the pry on the pommel and i wonder why no one has thought of this before its simply an amazing idea. a way to pry with my knife and not damage the tip sheer genius.
3) The bottle opener (see above)
4) the sheath is nice and slim and dissapers into my pocket it locks in wiht a solid click  this is very important to me as i consider knife retention to be very important and i believe a great knife is worthless without a great sheath.
5) the blade is stout and thick and while it may not be the slicer a spyderco mili is it will more than handle any task i come across i like to know that my blade has a little extra beef to help it cope with the abuse i throw at my knives.
6) i like the DP skull design its small and tasteful and i am glad to see it on the production version of the knife, i am also glad to see that unlike in some of the proto versions there arent giant logos on the blade everything is tasteful and nothing on it makes it appear that it is intended to be a weapon a big plus seeing as how ill be carrying it in our nations capitol where knives are frowned upon

As stated earlier this knife very much impressed me and is almost impossible to put down. It really lived up to my expectations:D

These are only my initial impressions but for now i think that i have found my perfect pocket companion  When i ETS from the army i cant imagine any knife id rather have in my pocket or on my belt everyday than the rat cutlery HEST

So the Hest does come with a Sheath?? I agree if you don't need a Hest to open a beer it's not any good. Unless your in survival mode and only twist tops are available :). Mine ships tomorrow.

As of today, I have a HEST on the way, so I'm glad to hear one more thumbs up for it. :)

Not that I had any doubts. I think it will be a slightly larger, much more capable version of the Izula, which has turned out to be a great knife itself.

im gonna c what i can do about pics i dont have acamera because i spend all my money on knives :D but i may be able to take camera phone pics but my camera phone is shitty and i dont think it would do the knife justice :(

Good review, thanks. I am hopefully going to get one in a month or 2. Depends on how some other things turn out.

I picked one up and love it however the skull logo was sanded off about 5 minutes after I had it. I am just not that into flashy logos on knives. I can certainly see carrying this one with me for along time.

Got one on the way, waiting for RYP to personalize the orders and send out. I will be looking forward to this one!

Great review. I'm torn between a HEST and an Izula now. Would you recommend the HEST as a superior EDC knife? How comfortable does it ride in pocket?

I find the Izula more fit for an EDC role because it is smaller and it is less "aggressive" looking than the HEST. The only problem I found with the HEST is that if your pocket isn't deep enough, the Pry-Bar will stick out.

I use the HEST as an EDC and I rides really well in the pocket, the sheath is awesome for that. But I find that the Izula is easier for people to accept because it is non aggressive looking compared to the HEST.

My advice, get both, they both are awesome EDCs, I find it useful to be able to leave the HEST and take the Izula under some circumstances, so get both you won't regret it.

Thanks for the observations.

I as well like the bottle opener. It would be the first thing I would use on a folding multi tool so why not on a fixed blade. I wish someone would stick one on my blackberry for that matter.

One question. Does the pry bar poke you and get in the way? I tend to avoid having a sharp end pointing up at me assuming it could get caught on something or jab me in a nut or something, if it’s not secured somewhere.

Dude, just where do you wear your nuts? :D

I'm not sure how easily the HEST would ride in-pocket. I have regular jeans and I imagine the Izula would ride a lot easier than the HEST would. Do you ever carry the Izula/HEST on your belt?

Haven't poked a nut or anything else for the matter.

The pry bar doesn't get in the way of anything, I don't even feel its here. Even seated in a small front pocket were 2 inches of the knife stick out, it doesn't get hang on anything. Was afraid for a moment that it would scratch the seats in the car and airplane, but it doesn't. I think that the design makes it very comfortable yet useful to wear and use. The only problem I see is the way people tend to look at you when they see such a thing that sticks out, but once you show them, they love it :).

By the way, YES the bottle opener is great. PRY, CUT and DRINK, all the essentials on a sturdy piece of steel.

I dont cary the hest on my belt because of the pry bar (horizontal carry), but the Izula I can and can even cary it completely concealed under the belt. But seriously, the HEST rides very well in a jean pocket, as the Izula. I carry both very often, but when I'm in very public places I prefer carrying a more discreet Izula, otherwise no problem with the HEST.

Another interesting use I became accomodated with the HEST, I use the pry-bar as a screwdriver, works great with the screws on the sheath but works especially great with the camlocs on the aircrafts, nice to have when the screwdriver was taken ou of the plane.

Thats a camloc setup often found on cowlings.
