Got another Kris

Truth is if every Spyderco or Benchmade and a lot of other knives were all sold only to people that would use them, the knife companies wouldn't be in business.
The evidence of this is seen by the huge number of knives sold years after production ceases still NIB. There's more seen in pictures on these forums everyday still pristine and new. All sorts of brands. Look at all the limited production runs companies make.
Only 600 and 1200 made? The companies have to know people will buy these for their limited numbers and not to use. If somebody just wants a user why buy one with a collector number? Mainly I don't use that many of the knives I own because it takes so much of the value away. if I used everyone of my 40 something Spydercos alone the value would go down at least 2000 dollars.

I'm a lot like Jill in that I buy and keep a NIB or two or three of knives I think may be highly regarded or collectable some time in the future. Especially those that appeal to me at the same time.

Where I think she and I differ is I don't openly consider myself a collector but then, maybe Jill doesn't either. Maybe she considers herself more of an investor which is just as much a viable pursuit.

Regardless of the reason to use or not use a sprint run knife, obviously the choice is ours to make. I think my biggest problem in not using a nice, new, and perhaps rare knife isn't the collectability or investment potential. Yes, those are in the back of my mind when I buy two or three of the same knives. But I think my problem is anal retentiveness . . .

I hate dirtying even a moderately priced knife sometimes.

I will offer one thing to Jill though, and Jill, don't take this as hounding you because I respect your pursuits and motives. Next time you find a nice sprint run knife that isn't over the top expensive like the Orange Militarys, buy a third one and do whatever it takes to force yourself to stick it in your pocket and replace that trusty Salt for a day or two or three. For one thing, it's FUN to show off such a cool knife. It is also super nice to actually use it, even for just opening mail if that is about all it's needed for. And finally, you still have those two minty ones stashed away for whatever reason :) I'm finding that each day I carry one of the Oranges I bought, over a month straight now, it is getting easier each day not to worry about it. Oh, and YES! I do get that anal retentive angst about carrying it sometimes but I know what I spend on knives annually and "wasting" a nice Orange Military is a nice, decadent treat to myself. Plus, it's barely more than twice what the Salt cost anyway :)

All the power to you, Jill.

Awesome photos Jill. It's definitely going higher up on my list. It's been years since I've bought a lockback, so I'm tossing around the idea of picking up a chinook iii, calypso zdp or a kris....or some combination.

I don't really care what people do with their knives. Use them to death, put them in a display case, I have an appreciation for all of them. I tend to be a moderate. I use all my knives, but most of them are used in conditions that will not impair the beauty of the knife. The looks are very important to me, as an art form. I still use them to open boxes, letters, and some moderately heavier duty stuff.

There are some knives though that get heavy duty tasks. My HI khuk gets used to the maximum of its potential, and by benchmade gravitator does some fairly significant work...but the scratches in the blade bothered me so much I actually refinished it (poorly) myself to make it uniform again. But still, it gets used pretty hard...so it's the folder I usually take with me hiking etc.

I do think that kris would perform really well in the real world though.

Oh and do you have any awesome photos of it closed too?

I just don't see the need to use my nice minty Spydercos. Someday they will hopefully be worth a bit more than they are now.

Yeah, but will you have the heart to sell them, it's like selling your first born.

Just use them. ;)

No, I don't have any like pictures of the Kris closed. It's been raining the past days and forecast calls for more but, I'll get some up for you Artfully, ASAP.
I don't know if I'll ever sell any Spydercos, I'm young yet and I am sinking a fair amount of money in my collection. (I'm living at home now and working full time, I've money to spend I may not have in the future) I couldn't do this and feel comfortable about it, if they was not at least retaining their value. I'm not planning to sell any, but things can change, I like the idea at least, that I could get my money back if I had to. I sure wouldn't own over 40 higher end and discontinued Spydercos, if I was buying them to use.
I like knives, the design, materials used, thought that goes into them. I appreciate the entire history behind them, from the designer and process of actually producing them. They are functional art to me. Yes, I know they can perform but I don't feel the need to see every one I own in action. In fact I'm content handling all of my cutting chores with a handful of the 80 something knives I now own.

I have only just bought the Kris after looking at it for the last 2-3 years..........images below.............

Most of my extensive knife collection are Safe Queens; using a Kris in any office that I work in would lead to a whole set of comments and questions I neither want nor have to deal with.
