Got Bear Grylls Knife

I'd rather buy a great knife like a sak over that ugly beast :) goofy would be the family friendly word I'd use to describe anyone using that thing :)

I got one when they first came out, and I didn't really know any better. It's an OK knife and I was going to use it as my camping knife, then I found an ESEE RC-6 and IZULA 2. Those are now my camping knives :)

I've heard that line is great for the price although I never held or used one. I was surprised to learn he shacked up with Gerber to put his name on a knife but then again more people would buy an inexpensive knife with his name on it then something double or triple the price. He does use them on his show tho so there's something to be said about that even tho what's usually said about him aren't the nicest things.

I wonder why lol.

to bring up survival shows... I've always enjoyed Les' work.

maybe it's because I live so close to him haha....

...what do you guys think?

The serrations are pointless.
As is the coating.
The guard on top limits its function.
The choil on the grip is going to make the handle uncomfortable for people with large or small hands.
The "rige-y" handle doesn't look like something that I would want to use for any length of time.
A full grind would have made it a more efficient slicer.

Other than that its swell.

And no mention of Bear Grylls was made. It would be a poorly designed knife if it had Santa Claus', Gandhi's and Nessmuk's names on it.

I bought my 9 yr.old son the scout ( smaller) model.

Honestly , I regret it. Very cheaply made knives and mediocre quality. The only reason people are buying them I think is because they are plastered all over the place in outdoor shops. Big displays of dozens of knives , all the same. Must be a marketing thing.

the serrations are great you terd.

when I was cutting a notch today practicing the hand drill method it was amazingly helpful cutting a perfect notch.

there are many other uses for the serrations.

These threads, and replies are amazingly predictable. Personally, it's your money, buy what you want. :D

Grabs the popcorn..

Not a big fan of the look of his knives. But everyone needs to stop bashing poor Bear! If I were stuck out in the middle of nowhere Id rather be with him than any of you bashers!!

You get what you pay for.... I like ray Mears better anyways, the woodlore has a 10 years+ waiting list, and I can understand why, quality over quantity. It's something that gerber just lacks nowadays... curse you fiskars...

All of which could be done equally well, if not better with a plain edge.

So...when those serrations get dull in one of those "survival situations"....how do you sharpen them?

Please do not start threads asking for opinions and then hurl insults because you do not like the opinions. At the least that action is what it is - insulting at worst it is trolling. If you are not going to post in this forum with respect, it is best not to post here.

My first inclination when seeing this thread title was "I'm sorry?"

Not worth it. Last Gerber knife I bought was a piece of junk. Fortunately, it was with a gift card that I had no other use for.

I've heard from a number of people I trust that those Bear Gryll knives are junk. I'm curious though, since you like it so much, have you tried a higher end knife? I'm just wondering what the standard of comparison is. Are we comparing it to a gas station $5 special? Then yes, it's the bees knees, as it were. Are we comparing it to ESEE, Fallkniven, Bark River, BUSSE, Himalayan Imports, Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade, Ka-bar, or a host of other knives? Then it's a piece of junk.

I've been carrying the folder that the OP links to a picture of as my EDC for going on 4 months now, and so far it has done just fine. I've used it a lot, even hacking out a bunch of vines and small Maple saplings from an overgrown landscape area at my house that scratched up the blade coating pretty good, but the lock up is still rock solid and it sharpened back up easily enough. (I'd be interested in a PE version though)

For all Bear/Gerber issues, I gotta say that I can't fault the knife itself.

Well, with the orange you won't lose it. And the grip looks quite usable, although I haven't held one.

I'd be more interested in the fixed blade, if they made a version without the serrations.

Is the knife imported?
