Got bit by a Kershaw today...

So I got my SG2 Blur back from Kershaw warranty today (sent back for blade play issues once I got it). I opened it, and checked the blade out for play. The liner hit a secure spot, just left of center. I applied fairly light pressure when suddenly the liner slipped off and cut my hand.

After the bleeding stopped, I used STR's method of testing liner locks for lock failure (NOT spinewhacking). With moderate pressure, I could get it to fail every time.

I'm sure Kershaw would make it right, but I'm just a little disappointed that there are still problems even after returning from warranty repair.

Also, maybe I just have bad luck, but 70% of the Kershaws I buy have liner problems out of the box. I thought the SG2 Blur would be different but it wasn't. I love their designs, but the cost of shipping almost every one adds up.

That sucks bud....
It really sucks when you get cut.... Especially after just coming back from the factory. I think you do just have some bad luck.
Good luck...
Let us know what you decide to do after the pros chime in..

That sucks. I got bit twice over the weekend but both time were purely my fault. I have never had a problem with a kershaw but all of mine are different leeks with frame locks.

And that sums up why I haven't been able to pull the trigger on one of these myself. I would dearly love to see them replace the liner locks with stud locks on most of the bigger knives.

+1 on that. Stud Locks all around:thumbup:

Well, I've got 3 Blurs: 1) a Tanto-bladed Tactical Blur, 2) the one in SG2, and 3) the one in S30V. The Tactical is my main EDC and has been put through fairly hard use over about a year's time. The other 2 are NIB, but I just took those out and tried to get the liner lock to fail on all 3. Not even a budge, but I'm not going to persist and damage them trying. Both NIBs have absolutely no blade or lock play. My EDC Blur has never failed, also has no blade or lock play, and is truly rock solid.

I don't know what to tell you, but it's one of the better liner locks in my experience, and I have a lot of folders with liner locks.

That said, I really like the stud lock.

I've never had a problem with the liner locks on my Blackout or Scallion. On occasion after reading one of these threads I'll try to make one or the other fail. Never has happened always a solid lock up. With the liner in it's lock position I don't see how it can slip backwards.

That said I'd like to see a few more Hawk locks, as I think they are easier to disengage than a liner lock. At least for me. Just personal preference.

Btw K_S sorry you got cut. I've Handled the blur and I think it is an excellent knife, but don't own one as of yet.

Maybe it was an "early Monday" piece... bad luck.

My S30V and SG2 Blurs are rock solid, so the Lahar and the ZDP Leek... I love them!

I just pulled out my Needs Work a couple days or so ago, and tested the lock strength on it against a cheapy S&W. S&W failed the first, second, and third time, with sight pressure. The Kershaw was fine, the lock didn't budge.

Sorry to hear that you got cut. I have about 15 Kershaw's but only 5 are liner locks. I have not had any problem with them, lock up is solid with no play. I know you are tired of shipping costs but perhaps they will send you a new one in exchange.
Good luck with no cuts!:)

While I haven't personally had a liner lock fail (outside of batoning with my leatherman), I would very much like to see less of these types of locks. Especially on larger knives.

At least give them the thicker lock bars like the JYD II.

Man, I'm glad that I've never been bit by any of my knives...Only by my cat when I try to comb out the mats in her fur.:D.

Aww. glockman's softer side. :)

It looks as if you just had a run of bad luck with Kershaws. A guy in another thread said that he had owned 3 Sebenzas and they all gave him problems. Highly unusual with CRK's level of QC. He just had a run of really bad luck. Looks like you ran into the same problem. Its not common but does happen.

Sorry to hear that KS, you seem to have the same luck as I do with the blurs. Just send them an email, and see what they do. I always tap the spine on my knee right out of the box before trying to close it with my fingers--just in case.
+1 on the stud lock--I'd love to have them on the blurs (maybe leeks too)--it is a design that they need to make as a signature--just like BM's AXIS, SOG's arc-lock, and CRK "bank vault"
It'd be like "Introducing......The power of speedsafe with the strength of STUD (R)--the all new blurs!"
:D

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't contacted Kershaw yet, just waiting to see if Tim or Thomas will chime in on this issue...
