(I want to say sorry in advance for the amount of space my pictures take up, no matter how hard I try they just wont format correctly.)

Hello, I'm new to the forums but I have done a decent amount of research on Benchmade Bali-Songs (I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a knife without knowing what options I had) and when I got my Model 51 in the mail today there was something kind of peculiar about it. I was worried about getting a fake the entire time I was browsing the internet for the best price, and when I found one for $180 from a company in Colorado I figured that it was kind of iffy but not iffy enough to be fake. Now that I have it, I'm 90% sure it is a fake. Here are some pictures of the knife I got:

The wiggle in the handles is what really set me off to believe that it is a fake, which really makes me sad because this is my dream knife. The blade is EXTREMELY sharp though, considering I have already cut myself 3 times with it haha. I do have the box, the silk bag and the warranty manual as well, but I figured that if it was a fake it still wouldn't be too hard to replicate those.

So Blade Forums, what is the verdict? Is it a fake?

A Benchmade knife with a sharp factory edge? Must be a fake...

All balisongs will wiggle because they have to swing freely. The knife you have looks good to me.

I knew the edge wasn't a deciding factor because all the reviews on fake Benchmades I have seen talk about how sharp the edges are. But if it looks good to you then that is a huge relief. The shade/placement of the watermark on the blade doesn't look fake to you? The butterfly looks small and a little too far down the blade. Granted this is the first Benchmade I have bought so I'm sorry for being so paranoid.

EDIT: I was using the pictures from this post as my main reference:

Thanks again for the help guys. I got the knife from (( non-paid dealer )). They were only iffy in the sense that no one else was selling a brand new Model 51 for under $200. The way I have always looked at things is "If it is too good to be true, then it is." But I guess this would be an exception if you guys think it is real.

Hmm, not sure about the logos. I've gotten 3 Benchmade 943's from authorized dealers and the logo has been a little different each time. The knife as a whole looks way too high quality to be a fake, though. Also, the faint lines on the blade look exactly like Benchmade's satin finish.

the Bm51 are a little notorious for having bad printing placement, but if it were a fake i'd be very surprised to see one with stock PB washers. but if you really want to make sure get another knife from BM with a d2 blade and test them side by side

Yeah, it was hard to judge the authenticity off of the printing alone because I saw so many pictures that had different prints on them. Thanks again for all the help

You have a real Benchmade 51. Play in the handles are normal. You can probably tighten it up a bit if you want. The logo on the 51 has been a QC issue to some but it looks fine to me.

Your blade stamp is in the exact place mine is. This one has none of the elements of the fakes I have seen. I bought mine for under 190 and it is real, so don't worry about the price. Fakes I have seen have the blade stamp located before the grind near the pivots. Loc Tite and tighten the pivots and looks like you have a winner!

It seems like alot of the 51's have weird placement of the logo. The one you have is definitely real. Good score too. Congrats!

Other sites sell them for $180 as well, they only put the higher price on there to keep Benchmade off their backs. Benchmade changed the rules about what resellers could charge a few years ago, so a lot of sites list a higher price and you have to call or enter a "coupon code" during checkout (written in the items description) and it brings it down to the lower price.

You had me worried, at first, because I also bought from the only place I could find selling them for 180 instead of 2 and up. I was relieved to hear yours is real because it probably means mine is as well :-)

Cool knife, ain't it? Its my edc now.

Doesn't look like a fake to me, but it reminds me of the 42 I received back in 2008. It was quite loose like that and I sent it back to Benchmade. I could have tightened it myself, but it being my first balisong I wasn't quite sure how tight it should actually be. But I was quite sure what I had wasn't right. If I had flipped, the blade would have tanked on the handle. Sure enough, it was completely different when Benchmade sent it back.

If you really need to know if it's fake, send it back to Benchmade. You'll solve two problems at once.

To the OP, food for thought:

Was the $20 that you saved worth the worry of buying a knife that you suspected was fake?

Even when money is tight, the cheapest price isn't always the best deal. Sometimes what you pay a little extra for is the knowledge that you'll be satisfied with your purchase. For example; by buying from an authorized dealer or a dealer that will take care of you after the sale.

Greetings, Classified00_2010! Hope all is well down there. Long time no hear. Best to you.

Definitely looks like the real thing to me.

They always sell the models with more play in them off with a small discount - check!

The small discount is to procure gauze, tape, bandaids, and Neosporin for the novice owners - check! Must be real! :D

I have never seen a BM51 fake so unless theres some place selling fakes that i havent herd of i dont think its a fake.
