I got my first Spyderco - a blue Delica FFG

It's a great knife; great quality, smooth operation, decently centered, and a good value.

But... It's weird ;)

The handle and blade shape are unique, to put it lightly. Don't get me wrong, its very comfortable in the standard saber grip but less so in others. The opening hole works well but it hard to flick open and adds a lot of bulk to the knife.

I'm just not sure what to think... I'm not sure if this is the start of a new brand love affair or a short lived fling.

I'll give it some time

When I got my first(Friday) the minute a opened it up and actually held it- it was love at first.... Uh... Embrace(?) so amazingly comfortable...

Plus I figured how to flip it open in only half an hour or so playing with it

My Delica 4 is in the mail, although i decided to go with the full stainless. Im kind of a Kershaw fanboy so im pretty excited to try something new.

Start thinking about triangles and trigonometry, and how interior angles and hypotenuses work. Then reconsider what the "height" does for the knife other than add bulk. :)

I love my Spyderco's and maybe I'm unique but I don't like flipping them open. :)

Not unique at all. I don't understand the fascination with flicking knives, it's pointless. If you need the knife to open quickly, buy an assisted opener or get a "Waved" model.

Welcome to the sickness that is Spyderco. Look forward to spending all your extra money on them and enjoying ever second of it.

I know what you mean, and I'm probably in the minority here, but I generally dont like spyderco's blade shape and handle designs my only spyderco is a Gayle Bradly, awesome knife to be suregreat steel, smooth action and good one to try spyderco with, but I just don't carry it very often, my $23 Kershaw oso sweet gets so much more pocket time. maybe I need to mature as I collector a bit to fully appreciate Spyderco. :p

Mine is waved- with a ziptie :D

Glad you like it! I made the mistake of buying my sebenza before my first spydie [Gayle Bradley]. Just didn't compare, it honestly has no reason to. The seb is in a whole different class and price point. So I turned around and sold it like all of my other mid level high end productions [shrug]

May or may not have saved myself money by doing so. The custom I just hopped on a list for would suggest I haven't. And I'm still itching for a police so I'm not convinced I've completely escaped the spydie addiction either

I've got a 'few' Spydies. I'm pretty sure that the pivot is too tight. Loosen it a little to find the sweet spot. You should be able to thumb flick it easily. I put my thumb
nail in the hole not the tip of my thumb. Play around with it and see what works for ya.
Don't loosen the pivot too much or you'll get side to side play. Use the knife hard and you may get side to side play.

You don't have to flick the knife if you don't want to but loosening the pivot will make the knife smoother.
The lockback design on your knife makes it less smooth opening and closing.....the liner and the
compression lock are Much smoother.

Give it some time. It looks weird to you now, but soon enough you'll be buying more Spydercos than you can even afford

Spyderco's are different but I love them. I own more spyderco's than BM's and have almost as many kershaws as spydies. I just prefer the hole in the blade for opening and I really like there designs.

I can't stand Spyderco's looks.

I know they make some of THE BEST knives, but I just can't get over the looks.

I always compare them to Glocks.
Great guns, but I won't touch 'em.

I remember having that same thought way back with my first ones... but the idea of function over form just screamed out and the more i used them, the more I got it (this is before finding these forums that brainwash ya). I hated the FRN handles at first but they're light and durable for sure. 7yrs later, my Delica is solid, smooth, and one of my regular goto folders.

There are still some Spyderco models that are too out there for my tastes but a Delica is a user and a classic.

Thats a great comparison though...hadn't thought of that before. Glocks aren't lookers but man do i love how it functions.

This is exactly how I got started on Spydercos. Poor guy doesn't even know what's about to hit him! I have about 15 now.

I was always a BM fan and never could find a Spyderco that I liked until I ran across the Delica G-10. I had a Scorpius, Native, Police, Military, Para-Military, Delica 4and a centafonte 3. All of those knives got sold or traded for one reason or another. The para was about the closest to what I wanted in an EDC, but at the time it was only tip down and it was a little wider than I wanted in an EDC. When I got the Delica in G-10 I thought it was a nice knife, but still not my style. After throwing caution to the wind I ended up with the G-10 Delica in my pocket and grew to love it for EDC. I just wish they would come back and not charge an arm and a leg for one.

Thanks for your responses. Im glad to see my initial reaction is pretty common.

Ive been playing on and off with this Delica all day (in the car, at work, etc.) and I gotta admit the damn thing is intriguing. Kind of like a revelation ;)

I decided I "need" to order a Endura and Stretch tonight to explore this further :o
