I hunt quail and chukar in the Owens Valley, north of Mojave. I'd be glad to discuss it with you at BushBash I and go over some maps. There are some areas up there with bunnies too.
Both Marlin and Ruger semi-auto 22s are decent, low-cost rifles. I can bring one of each to our 5/2 gathering for you to try.
I'm not a big fan of the Tejon Ranch offerings, based mainly on price. I know some guides who will take you on a guided hog hunt (extremely high success rate) for about the same money. Public land hog hunting in CA can be tougher sledding. Not a lot of great areas, although the region near Fort Hunter Liggett isn't bad. I'll refer you to some hunting forums where you can collect more info.
