Got my sarsquatch + mashed cat today! Now to get rid of decarb

Had a chance to work on the knife a little bit more tonight. I will say, the 40 grit belts make a WORLD of difference. All of the decarb from the blade is gone, and all but a thin line of dimples is left, I will remove them tomorrow and then work my way up in belt grits. I haven't decided where I want to end up yet, so we'll see how it goes.

Here are some pics with a 40 grit finish, very very rough. I think I'll bring it up to 80 after I get rid of the remainder of the dimples.

..and the awesome mashed cat sheath.

Honestly, i'm considering drilling out the tubes and doing the whole thing, but I have no way to get them back in and don't know how I feel about hex screws etc..

Looks like your getting that sarsquatch fixed up pretty good 230. How do you like it compared to your ash?

There are some threads on this forum of home-made tube spreaders. The one I am thinking of had the coned heads of wood screws on a vise. As the vise was compressed it expanded the tubes. It looked very effective and would be pretty inexpensive. Practice on the process would likely be better on a different knife but it looks like a workable solution.

That Squatch is coming along nicely. 40 grit is the way to go to get some steel off. It leaves some deep scratches, so once you have the dimples almost invisible, switch to 80 and then maybe 180. You'll have a sweet satin finish.

Just a quick point...I sharpen my swedges as they work better sharpened....whether for using with a ferro rod or for going through tendon and bone which might damage the razor edge I like on my main blade....especially near the tip .... or for rawling out a bowl for a fire drill or whatever similar rough use that is better done by a more obtuse edge....and I baton all the time with my knives and it has never changed the way they perform with a baton ... or damaged the obtuse edge of the clip....

Preserving a "baton" which is going on the fire anyway seems pointless....the dinks in the baton don't stop it working either...so for me the issue of sharpened swedges being a problem for batoning has never seemed right....

230, I'm glad this worked out for you. I hope the insurance claim goes smoothly for Jt as well. Nice lookin blade.

You have one like mine:eek::D

kurodrago, that is awesome! I take it that you had the knife hydro-dipped by an aftermarket firm? Could you provide some details? I'm interested in the company, the cost, and if the end resilt is durable enough to withstand much more than display. :D

All finished!

I'm happy with how it turned out, I was going for more of a ban looking finish than a stock satin, clearly I'm not ban, but I think I did pretty good. I'm probably gonna do the entire knife when I get some time, pull the handles etc.. This was kind of fun.

It's now super scary sharp.

Looks great 230 are you going to put the same handles back on or something different.

I don't know actually, it could be fun to switch the handles. This is a project for when I have a lot of free time though, right now I don't.

That satin finish looks really well done, I'll have to send you my nmsfno if you need something to do when you get bored. :D :D

You sure did a nice job on it, I think the SARQ is one of the coolest knives in the Busse line-up. Feels like a good camp knife and is thin enough to be light an nimble in the kitchen dept.

I haven't gotten a chance to chop with it yet, but i'm thinking it will not be the greatest as the blade is pretty light and not that long. It should hold it's own, but for a first chopper, you need a BM. I'd imagine this will chop about the same as my CG ASH, maybe a little better as the edge should make it bite quite deep for a knife this length.

I think a 10 inch model with the same blade profile would be sick though!

They are actually really good choppers for their size. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It won't out chop the BWM.

Looks great though.
