Got my Superleaf today

Just got my superleaf today. I must say it is thick!
I am impressed with the knife overall.
It rides very deep in the pocket and lockup is bank vault solid.
It is the smoothest spydie I've come across in a good while.
The only knock I can think of is that there is a whole lot of handle.
Overall it's a winner in my book.

I think that is really one on my own complaints about Spyderco in general, they have a lot of handle to blade. I tend to prefer a more 50/50 split.

I am really looking forward to getting my own superleaf though. Can't wait to hear and see reviews on it!

I used to be right there with you. 50/50 or bust. But the more I use spydercos (a lot which have more handle to blade) the more I'm convinced that having more handle is not such a bad idea. I think it offers more blade control, balance, and comfort while in use.

I think that my wish is not necessarily less handle, but more blade to fill the handle.

I think that in 90% of cases the 3 3/4 to 4 inch blade is more than enough, but I think that adding 1/4 to a 1/2 an inch to the blade would in many cases just make the knife better.

But there are knives that I think would benefit from some handle adjustment.
I actually bought and then returned a Delica because it just seemed silly in my hand. The weight balance was there, but it just felt all wrong, same with the Endura. That is why I like the Stretch a lot, I think that it is everything that the Delica and Endura are supposed to be, but that close to 50/50 blade/handle give it a much much better feel in hand.

Just my opinion of course, I know that thousands love both the Delica and Endura...and to be a bit of a hypocrite, I love the Manix 2. BUT, I think that a half inch on that blade with the same handle size would make it my absolute favorite.

Yep, I had to order one of these. Hope it gets here by the weekend, but with all this damn snow it might be next week. :(

Well I think I discovered the source of the amazing smoothness of the SuperLeaf. It looks like it uses Nylon washers ;) It seems we are seeing more and more of these making a come back these days, even in high end knives.

Interesting.

Thank you, I was wondering about that.

My new Large Lum, has a nylon washer on the locking side, and a paper thin PB washer on the other.

The nylon washer is thicker, which I assume they had to use to allow clearance for the BB detent when the blade is opening or closing.

The blade actually sits a little of center because of this, but one can barely notice it unless you are really eyein it, lol, like all of us AFI`s do, lol.

Still, very smooth action upon opening and closing it.

As did the SuperHawk...fwiw.

My superleaf arrived today together with an izula =D
But my camera just have to spoil on this day!

Ok, when i unboxed the superleaf, took it out of the bubble wrapped, i was impressed immediately. For a knife of this built, with this kind of spine thickness, it's incredibly light! REALLY. I own many 5 ounces knives and they slowly pull down my pants at times, so i thought 4.7 ounces would be somewhere there BUT i'm wrong. Being built as a heavy duty knife, the superleaf makes a SERE2000 feels like 'Big Show'.
Egronomics wise i don't think i need to repeat what other superleaf owners have been emphasizing =) Damn, it has great balance as well.
And finally, the 1 thing that pisses me off... wait for it... wait for it... Is, why are my superleaf's metal parts (screws, clip, liners etc) so sticky?! Was the assembling crew having a candy party? =O

And my post was certainly not a dig to nylon washers or their use. I have several awesome knives using them. I'm not opposed to whatever Spyderco does with their knives when they work as well as the SuperLeaf. I trust Spyderco as much as any top notch MFG with regard to the quality of their products.

I was just sure that a typical PB pivot design can't be that smooth and sure enough :)

The SuperLeaf rocks.

Yowza, it was not taken that way! :) I was commenting only because it's another point of consistency between the SH and the SL - which is a positive comment, since the SH was a fine knife indeed.

I prefer PB but that's because I'm a curmudgeon. ;) There is really nothing wrong with nylon, teflon or nylatron washers.

I didn't think so :) And I am with you 100%. I prefer PB but will trust the MFG when they backslide a little :D

One thing is for sure, the difference between the white washers and PB is dramatic as far as smoothness goes . . . And again, at least in the present, there is NO side to side play.

I think I prefer the smoothness over the warm and fuzzy I might get with PB anyway. It's really that good. And from what I understand, it's not a money matter. I'm under the impression that good nylon washers are just a few cents cheaper than PB.

My mailman must take their old motto to heart - he delivered mine today after two consecutive days of storms. A couple of notes relative to the SuperHawk. The SH shipped with the "high ride" clip, while the SL shipped with the low ride version. No biggie either way, since they're interchangeable. SL has spine and choil jimping, where the SH had none. (That might be intentional, given the different likely uses of a HB vs a regular blade.) The carbon fiber scales on the SH really are nicer, but I'm not going to try a swap immediately - the lanyard tube design present an opportunity to foul things up that I don't need to rush to take advantage of. ;)
