take one construction pencil sharpener, add pencil sized fatwood, twist, and you get shavings.

the sharpener is small enough to fit in your firekit, and also makes nice dart/arrow points.....

i did the same thing a while ago by putting some sticks of fat wood in an electric pencil sharpener to get fatwood dust.

the pencil sharpener would be easier to carry in the field though :)

This came up a while ago. Its a gadget to me. How many other uses does it have? That won't be found takin up space in my kit.

i carry one in each pack its just part of my kit. They work great, While walking pick up a few small sticks and put them in your pocket. If the stick is moist sometimes just carrying in your pocket is enough to get it dry. Very easy to use even with cold fingers to make tinder for the firesteel.

I've always carried one in my fire-kit but have never used it, maybe I should give it a whirl !!!

Single use gadget or not, they can have their place. Like another commented, they take up no more space than a single tinder cube. A tinder cube is used then gone. This can make tinder indefinitely.

Last winter, I took a spill in the icy river on a brisk January day. I crawled out on the bank littered with dead dry sticks. I took out my knife and began to make fuzz sticks but it wasn't easy. Wish I could have had a 1/2" x 3/4" x 1" pencil sharpener with me then. I think some people would be surprised to find out how fast their fingers and hands lose dexterity in extreme cold. Simple tasks like whittling fuzz sticks suddenly aren't so simple. And you don't have the risk of cutting your frozen numb fingers to deal with.

But to each their own and I'm sure no one will force you to carry one. I think it's a great idea.

one can use it one handed too, wedge it under your foot, insert twig with good hand and twist1

I made a couple of kits for my neighbors kids and the pencil sharpener was considered a godsend for making tinder to their parents.. Yes they also had a knife also but they felt more comfy with them using that sitting still, and we all know how long kids stay still...lol

Also I see it as an easy way to make tinder while walking or if you're having trouble finding any dry tinder.. I've used the shavings in a tinder can and it was a little damp but it lit pretty easily in it....

yea cuz a pencil sharpener takes up SOOOOOOO MUUUUUCH SPACE! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

It's time to man-up. You know it takes up a huge amount of space. Look at the damned thing! It's as big as a typewriter for god's sake! You know a plastic pencil sharpener is, in point of fact, one of the heaviest implements that one can carry around.

It's really true, though. I have a friend who damaged a testicle carrying one of these out of Home Despot. :D
