Gotta protect your dog

I'd just carry a bag of steaks. Rather than hurt the coyotes, you could feed them and have more pets.

Knives are a terrible last resort for any SD type situation. Even if you have the skills (which most people don't), you would be rather lucky to avoid damage against any carnivore, should it come to that. I would definitely not trust my life to any knife against a pack of Coyotes! Sorry, but I find that idea ridiculous. That's what firearms are for.....

1) Move to a state that allows the right to self defense. 2) Get training. 3) Carry a gun. Helpful against all types of predators.

You bought a Manix2 XL to protect your 10lb dog? SMH .. whatever dude ... That's the excuse you told you wife.
The only way a knife would be effective during a dog attack is if it already has your 10lber in it's mouth while you're holding it or it has your arm/leg/belly in it's mouth.
You'd be better off duct-taping that blade to 3' stick ..
Nope. Bought the Manix because I like Spyderco and wanted that s90v steel. I have a Manbug ZDP-189 also but that certainly can't qualify as a defender.
Btw, my wife doesn't know I have another new knife. I'll tell her after her next pair of new shoes...probably tomorrow.

If you're stuck where you are, go to the hardware store and buy a hickory sledgehammer or pickaxe handle. Decent length, good weight, serious wood, awesome club.

You might want to carry a stick or baton as well. With a stick you can keep some distance and stop a charge.

I'm not being smart and I'm not being a ninja, but honestly if I knew a dog were actually going to attack then I would prefer a 4" knife to a stick. If you get a bad dog that really wants to have at it then you are not going to keep him at bay with a stick. It's just not gonna happen. You ever see that video of the dog catchers trying to hold off the pit bull with a six foot metal rod designed specifically for that purpose? It was almost comical how useless it was. Hes going to be on you in half a second and once he's on you that stick is going to be worthless. You will take more damage with the knife but the outcome will go your way. I am not a proponent of using knives for self defense. Were we talking about another human, I would say the stick, all day long. But in this particular situation I believe a knife would be the better tool of the two.

Pepper spray or a twelve gauge would be better than either. ;)

P.S. Beautiful knife btw! I bought a manix LW earlier this year that I ended up giving away. I have a feeling I would have like the xl much better.

You don't want to shock him, you want to kill him. A 4" blade is perfectly capable of that. Most coyotes don't go more than about 30 pounds. Once u get past all the hair there isn't that much to em.

Annyyyywho...I'm going to bow out of this one.

Nice knife op. Get some bear spray and stay safe. :)

The "stick" idea is far better than a knife. If you try to knife a coyote, someone is going to be hurt, and it won't be the 'yote. Carry a sledge hammer handle. You are not trying to kill the predator - you are trying to discontinue the attack. That's why the tool handle is more useful than a short knife.

A heavy mag type flashlight works very well too.

I have seen a dog knocked out from a light tap on the head with a cheap flashlight.

It all depends. A stick/club is a better weapon...until the dog gets ON YOU. Then the stick is worthless and a knife would be much more effective. This video illustrates both of those ideas. The idea that you can keep a determined canine at bay with a stick is not very realistic. You get one shot...and if you miss, you are defenseless. Meh, everyone is going to believe what they will.

Like I said in my first post they are both very poor options. Spray or firearm would be much better than either.

And btw, if a 30 lb canine attacks me, I assure you he is going to get hurt. No knife or stick required for that to occur. These aren't the hounds of hell from some Hollywood movie. It's a dog. Lift and slam. He will break.

Edit: and yes, I will obviously get hurt too...just not as bad as him. :)

Reminds me of an incident a few years ago. There was a loose dog in the neighborhood, and for whatever reason our paths crossed as I stepped outside and it charged me. I didn't even think, I simply reacted and swung at it with an uppercut as it lunged. The dog was caught in the jaw, it flipped at the impact, and then it went tearing off as fast as it could.

Sorry, but coyotes in Illinois are not 60-70 pounds. A big coyote in the midwest is 45lbs, and most are closer to 30lbs. Lots of fur make them look bigger than they are. The record coyote measured is 74.75 lbs. Not that it really matters, I would not let my dog (~50 lbs) mess with one coyote let alone a pack.
That is what I thought until someone I know shot one that big. Mountain lions are not supposed to be in IL either, but I know someone who got a photo of one in Coles county on a game camera, and a ranger shot one in the southern part of the state.

Knowing how fast dogs are, and having seen Coyotes dance around domestic dogs I wouldn't want to have to try to stab one with a pocket knife. Even an S90V super steel one. :) I'm one that agrees with the stick and pepper spray as the best as a 12 ga. will probably bring too much attention.

Nothing I'm going to disagree with there. :)

I've had a couple dogs on me. Use a knife. Anything that cuts will be fine. If you can get them before they are on you a rifle is best.

I am so glad you said this. You are the fist person that I have heard say this. I have been telling my woman this for many years now.

Obviously it wont work on any dog too heavy to get above chest high. But, on most dogs (coyote) it should do great. Use your human anatomical posture and gravity to stop the dog permanently. If it is attacking me, then it should be put down one way or another. On pavement, this move should break bones or render a concussion.

First off I hear news reports about these aggressive coyotes but I've only ever seen two out walking my dogs and they always scurry off.

10lb dog or cat fenced in with humans inside= bait
10lb dog with human at side = work

Good luck.

Keep your eyes and ears open and your cellphone in your pocke and I'm sure you'll be able to properly handle any situation.

Assuming you can't carry a pistol, I'd have spray, a knife and a walking stick. Don't swing the stick like a bat, use it like a spear - Jab, jab, side sweep, jab. Personally I normally carry a pistol and have a Fokos (a knife is understood to be carried at all times) when I'm in the woods out back with my dog.

Nice knife, BTW! I was thinking hard about that one, but got a shot at a Hogue EX04 automatic wharnie, so I took it!
