Gps ?

Bushman,

I tramp around terrain very similar to yours, just a few miles south. I found that my Garmin eTrex Vista would lose signal in heavy timber and steep canyons. I upgraded to a 60CsX and amazed at the difference! It has a much-improved chipset (SIRF III) and external antenna. It also has an auxillary antenna socket but I have never needed to try one. The ability of this device to lock and hold a signal is truly amazing.

can those of you who have External anntenas (for GARMIN) run me thru on choosing one, setting up and using it? IE could i mount it on the top of my pack etc etc.

most of where i hike is deep gullies and HEAVY overhead canopy (big arse douglas firs and cedars)

Garmin doesn't make an antenna that is specific for backpakcers (reception is generally worse in a vehicle than it is out in the open). But, it would not be that hard to secure the antenna to the top of a pack. It is just a little black box with a length of cable (8 ft) attached and plugs into the back of the receiver. The antennas are designed to ride outside of the vehicle, while the unit is inside.

Bob W beat me to it.
