Graham Razel Knives

That's why I would just visit his shop and talk to him. :D I go close by at least once a week.

Are you talking about wanting a Razel with the square edge? The razels were popular and then others copied. I suspect that kind of blew up the market. I do have the CRKT Ringed Razel that I never use.....

It took a pretty nice edge on the Sharpmaker.

Back in 2008 when the CRKT collabs were supposed to come out I pre-ordered a stubby as soon as they were available. After months of delays, I stumbled across this sales thread (http://www.bladeforums.com/threads/graham-bros-utility-razel-fs.556167/) and jumped on it:D

Since I received it, it has done 7 years climbing and repairing wind turbines with me and 2 years as an operator at gas turbine peaker plants and these are the worst pics I could get of it:)

I would love to know how you're getting a mirror edge on the sharpmaker. I've got the UF stones but never pulled that off....secrets?

I just go slow and steady through the medium, fine, and ultra stones using progressively lighter pressure with each stone. The strop helps too but I got nice edges before using it. My Grayman Dua is probably the nicest edge I've gotten for a mirror finish but I go an Umnumzaan and S110V PM2 pretty nice too.

It does take some time to do it and I didn't set out to get a polished edge. These few knives that have one had some damage to the edge that I was trying to fix/minimize so they spent much more time on the stones. Other knives usually just require just a few passes.

I have a thread about the Sharpmaker here but there's not much more information in it: http://www.bladeforums.com/threads/sharpmarker-strop-getting-mostly-excellent-results.1505771/

I added a lanyard to the Razel so I could pull it out of the sheath I use instead of squeezing it up from the bottom. I'm usually not a big lanyard fan but they work well on the Razel and Techno.

Dude! This knife style makes so much sense.

I have to ask:
Is it hollow ground for the knife edge (I'm cheap and considering grinding a chisel for the DIY poorman's version of your knife)?

Have you used it to chisel? How does it preform compared to a regular chisel?

How do you find maintaining the two edges?

How is it as a pry tool?

Can you use the pommel as a hammer?

Have you used it to slice fruit (oranges/apples)?

Would a belly on the knife edge help or hinder?

Do you use a sheath? Which kind?

Any general comments on the design as a whole?

Yup, hollow ground for the main edge and flat ground for the chisel tip.

Have you used it to chisel? How does it preform compared to a regular chisel?

I've used it mainly for scraping, but I did use it to enlarge the mortise for a latch plate when I first got it...it worked quite well.

How do you find maintaining the two edges?

Super easy on diamond plates.

How is it as a pry tool?

Great so far.

Can you use the pommel as a hammer?

The pommel is pretty narrow for that, but I have hammered ON the pommel with no issues.

Have you used it to slice fruit (oranges/apples)?

Lol, nope...I've got nice thin blades for that.

Would a belly on the knife edge help or hinder?

For my uses it would hinder it.

Do you use a sheath? Which kind?

I use the Kydex pocket sheath that it came with.

Overall, I love it! It's clipped to my bag o'crap that goes with me whenever I leave the house...I would never sell it without already having a replacement.

Is that flashlight a Lumintop Ti Tool?

If it is:
How long have you had it?

How often do you find you have to change the AAA?

How does it tarnish?

Do you ever actually flip the pocket clip?

Any thoughts on it in general?

Have you or how would you compare it to it's AA closest equivalent (the EagleTac D25a Ti?
).

I appreciate your thoughts

Super thorough, thanks!

The main utility for a razel is for carpenters to clean up wood cuts, mortises and tenons. Outside of that they are not extremely practical IMO.

It is a Lumintop AAA Tool:
  • How long have you had it? I've had it for several months.
  • Have you or how would you compare it to it's AA closest equivalent (the EagleTac D25a Ti)? I'm not familiar with that light. The only single AA light I have is a Reylight brass Pineapple. That is a great light with a 14500 rechargeable in it but its output sucks with a AA primary cell. With the 14500 it blows the AAA Tool away in output.
  • Any thoughts on it in general? I think the AAA Tools are fantastic EDC lights. That titanium one is always on me if I'm out of the house. I like it enough that I picked up the Massdrop brass version and carry it in my pocket often (mainly to get a patina going on it). I also own the copper version which has a mechanical switch in lieu of the electronic one on the brass and titanium. I prefer the electronic switch. Massdrop also did a titanium version anodized blue which I ordered. It should arrive next month. All of mine have the Nichia emitter (warmer tone, more accurate color rendition, less max output) expect for the copper one which has a Cree emiiter (cooler tone, brighter). Obviously I prefer the Nichia.
  • Do you ever actually flip the pocket clip? No. I don't really use the clips. Removing them is difficult and will scratch the body. Pro tip: swap the head and tail on the body instead of moving the clip :D Edit: Actually, that won't work with the titanium versions due to the different head but will with the brass and copper tools.
  • How does it tarnish? The titanium will not tarnish at all but scratches easily. The brass is developing a nice dull patina. The copper gets a beautiful patina that has colors like a patch of oil. I just got a Maratac copper light yesterday. You can see how the copper looks new next to one exposed to the atmosphere and handled for months. Each one will tarnish differently depending on environmental variables.
  • How often do you find you have to change the AAA? I use Amazon NiMH rechargeables in them. I use the brass and titanium lights often, probably daily for quick illuminations and occasionally for dog walking when I forget a bigger light. I have not recharged them yet after several months and all three brightness levels are still functioning.

Obligatory nerdy acknowledgement reply complete with emoji.

I've gotta admit, those Massdrops look pretty cool!

I had a CRKT fixed stubby razel. Some asshole stole it out of my car.
I'm a long time believer in "What goes around comes around" at some point whoever stole your knife will pay a price for doing so. Hopefully sooner rather than later ;)

Zt collab with Razel please! Come on KAI what are you waiting for!?

I’ve been steering away from ball bearing flippers lately but I would buy one of those if the design and price were right. If ZT did one on PB washers with thumb studs/disc, even better.

That was one of the great things about the ZT Emersons. They were on pb washers. They had other problems though.

I wish that peope would remember that a well made knife on pb washers flips great. I don't mind bearings in certain knives but they appear in too many knives they shouldn't.

I thought it was pretty much impossible to get a mirror edge too with the SM. Sometimes I would get close, but never a complete mirror. As in if you turned it in the light you could see the scratch pattern still.

Until I went to sharpen my small 21 and the convex edge had me going for hours with no progress as I was missing the apex. I ended up with a small 21 with the most beautiful mirror polished edge bevel that was barely sharp. It was extremely long and frustrating. Finally I started laying the edge against the stone at the tip instead of the heel and that let me hit the apex.

Also notice photoman has that green strop in the picture. Lots of people seem to get mirror edges from stropping
