I thought it was pretty much impossible to get a mirror edge too with the SM. Sometimes I would get close, but never a complete mirror. As in if you turned it in the light you could see the scratch pattern still.

Until I went to sharpen my small 21 and the convex edge had me going for hours with no progress as I was missing the apex. I ended up with a small 21 with the most beautiful mirror polished edge bevel that was barely sharp. It was extremely long and frustrating. Finally I started laying the edge against the stone at the tip instead of the heel and that let me hit the apex.

Also notice photoman has that green strop in the picture. Lots of people seem to get mirror edges from stropping

The few I’ve shown with near mirror edges had many strokes on the Sharp Maker due to issues such as dings on the edge. They aren’t perfectly mirrored and scratches can be seen if the light hits them right but they are still pretty nice. Ultrafine stones and the strop definitely help.

Yes this is exactly what Inwas talking about. Usualy with the sharpmaker, even the ultrafine, the best finish I can get is a semi-mirror. Exactly as you describe, looks mirror at somenangles but at ofhers you can see the scratch pattern.

The only reason I could get a true mirror on my small 21 with the ultrafines was because I spent so many hours sharpening without hitting the apex. (Damn convex edge grind)
