Grail Knife, Meh....Is it just me ?

It's about the journey, while the destination can be rewarding the journey is often superior.

I have not yet acquired a grail knife off of my list yet, I can only relate it to my firearms.
I spent well over a year and $1200+ piecing together my ideal 10/22. When it was completed I found the perfect round for it. Then into the safe it went and onto the next firearm I went. I am a collector of nothing and 100% intend to use everything I own, yet there are a couple in the safe now that I have never fired.

yep. the reason everyone and i mean just about everyone wants minor changes on every knife is cause there is nothing perfect for each person. always some sort of compromise...yeah same applies to women and everything else:)

And to add to my earlier post, my grails have never stayed that way very long. Dont get me wrong, mostly my grails have been spectacular but variety is a wonderful thing.

Sometimes it can be to a degree.

This was a grail fixed blade of mine since I was a kid.

I absolutely love it, but when I first got it in hand the handle didn't exactly agree with me.
Didn't take long though for my hand to get used to it and now that initial worry has completely gone away.
I wanted the knife so much that I didn't even think I could potentially not like the handle.

A disappointing knife is easier to get rid of than a disappointing woman. :p Hence, seeking a "grail" type knife is MUCH less expensive (or dangerous). ;) The similarity is the fun/thrill of the hunt and the initial trial period.

Nutinfancy is like this. He raves about every knife and then I get it and I'm like fk you nutinfancy this isn't me at all and this knife sucks. He's now showing off clones and crappy knives lately. Pretty disappointing.

But if I watch Nick Shabazz, he's more thorough with everything. He has saved me lots of money and I've purchased some knives I really really liked when I got them because his reviews were thorough and informative. I obviously don't blindly follow him. While we do have similar tastes they are not the same. Everything is with a grain of salt. But at least he goes over many things most do not.

Alot of reviews and people who have knives want to say nothing but good things. It's disappointing.

I appreciate Nick’s reviews because he is detail oriented and shows off aspects of the knives that knife enthusiasts want to know about. This is despite his voice which is an annoying Jewish stereotype. (I am not sure if he is Jewish. Maybe I’m just jealous)

Most youtube knife “reviewers” have a terrible format where they don’t even look at things like centering, lockup, fit and finish. Infact alot of them aren’t even reviews because they literally unbox the knife on Camera.

They just go “this knife is so comfortable in my hand” “check out this jimping.”

I wont call it my grail knife but I had wanted a Hinderer XM-18 for quite a while. When the xm-18 finally arrived, I was not as excited. In fact, I even attempted to tade it right away. However, as time went, the xm-18 has grown on me. To date, I realize it is actually a very attractive knife to me.

I get real excited about a knife for about a week but then the perfect knife wears off.

There are several different designs and they are all good. Just different. Wouldn't want to part with any and in the past if I did, I end up coming back full circle back to what I had 10+ years ago. So, I learned that some knife designs are just meant to stay. But that takes some time to realize and the longer you are in this hobby the more you will eventually come to certain conclusions..

If I get interested in a knife (usually one I hear about here), I'll see if austonh (epicsnugglebunny) has a video on it. I can generally tell from that whether I want to pursue it further.

Funny thing is, quite a few of us, if not most, get into knife making as either a hobby or a profession for this very reason. The ability to create a knife to our own specs, and the continuing journey and evolution of designs as that journey progresses.

I don’t have a knife retailer near me that sells anything but Buck, Gerber and the odd Opinel. That means that I have no access to see/feel knives I THINK would be my grails (Chris Reeve and Hinderer).

Good for the pocketbook as I can’t justify paying $400-500 for a knife that might not be perfect for my needs, but prevents me from making an educated decision as I can’t handle dozens of different knives before buying my “grail”.

The only folder I ever gave "grail" status to was the Benchmade 940-1. I pretty much refuse to pay over $200 for a folder so I figured the -1 would be unobtainable.

I acquired one through a trade and I couldn't be happier. I like it more than I imagined. It's my favorite folder.

Some knives are like this. Sleeper grails. Sometmes they sit unloved in a shoebox in your closet for years. (That’s how I store my knives, like a crack dealer lol) When you are going through your boxes in the shoe box you see the box of that knife and are like “why did I even buy this, better not carry it so I can sell it LNIB.”

Then one day you see a youtube video expounding the good points of that knife. You go to pull it out and put it in your pocket. At first it seems like nothing special but you soon start realizing how amazing a knife it is. Soon it becomes your favourite knife.

True story, happened to a friend of a friend of mine.

Edit: To the OP, maybe you just need to pick better grails?

That's why I did it. Now I just need time.
Do you know how to make that?
;):D:eek:

I've got my grail fixed blade, well two of the same model just in case. Still looking for my grail folder and I don't know it will ever be made. The PM2 comes close, as does the Manix 2, but neither is quite there Looking is 90 percent of the fun so I don't mind.

Yes...there is a lot of Kumbaya around the fire with s'mores on this forum. leave honesty at the door/shut up/ruffle feathers and fit in.

I'll prefer to be honest, to drink from the keg....with 2 feet in the air

Really?
What forum have you been looking at?
Can't have been this one, with the plethora of threads and posts bashing practically every knife made by every maker since the beginning of time...

If you’re looking for keg stands you might check out the Whine & Cheese sub-forum. Be sure to take the marshmallows as peace offerings :D
