Do you think it is worthwhile to fill the gaps to prevent water incursion or not a worry? I coat the haft before putting the head on with BLO but it will be there for some years.

yes, they're both serrated contact wheels.

In fact, if the wedge is too wide, it can compromise the side to side tightening action. We've seen a few pictures of axes flying off the head with the wedge stuck across the long axis of the eye.

True, that small of a space isn't necessarily a critical flaw. Filling it would be a matter of preference.

I would use it. It's the only way you are going to know if the hang is good enough.
