I am looking at Gransfors bruks hatchet, any thoughts or what would be a better brand.
regards sammtv:D

I don't have a GB, but the general consensus is they are great. Great grinds and overall finish. Someone who has one will chime in and make it even more convincing.

I just got a GF wildlife hatchet and it came out of the box shaving sharp. little pricey comepared to others. I have a wetterlings wildlife and if you have a way to touch up the edge a tad it would be about as good for less dough. I looked around on the ebay stores and got mine from a man on eebbaayy from a gent in england delvered for a total of around $75 don't know if he has anymore but if not the wildlife can be found for around a hundred plus shipping. a wetterling may still be found for 40 or so not sure I got mine afew years ago for 27 plus postage. a few folks praise fiskar, the tupperwehr axe a vale they say. It is what you like and can afford and your ability to make something work for you. some times it not all the tool, it is the skill of the person using it and your ability to to maintain it.

but Gf are very good tools. Mine came with a registration card for a 20 or 25 year guarantee/ warranty. don't think anyone else does that.

There is no better brand in my opinion. Get the GB, you won't be sorry.

GB makes top notch tools. I've been using them for years.

I have a GB wildlife hatchet that I carry in my hunting pack. I bought it based on reviews and opinions of the members here. This thing is CRAZY sharp. One low pressure swipe and you have a huge bald spot on your arm. It is as sharp or sharper than most of my high end knives. Balance is excellent. They are expensive but when you handle one you will know why. Wetterlings are supposed to be good less expensive alternatives but I have not handled one so I don't know for sure. -DT

I have one of the GB mini hatchets I carry hunting along with my skinning knife, makes quick work of skinning a deer and cleaving the pelvis bone. Everyone in my deer camp borrows it to skin theirs. Stays really sharp even after a lot of work. I have a Wetterling camp axe also and it is a good axe too but the metal on the GB seems to be superior.

New guy, howdy everybody!

I have 9 Gransfors axes, some of the best there is IMO. The Wildlife is the one I use most.

I have a Wetterlings Large Hunters, which is the poor mans GB Small Forest Axe. However, it came with perfect grain (perfect) and a straight bit. I prefer the Wetterlings sheaths, they are more robust but less aesthetic than the GB. I can sharpen my axe (you should not own an axe, IMO, if you can't sharpen it), so to me, better value. I sanded and soaked the handle in linseed oil.

Personally, I am 1000% happy with the axe. For me, after infusing this axe with my own tender loving care, I could never justify spending triple for a comparable axe (50 v 150).

However, if you have the dough, buy the SFA - I would, but I am in college lol

I have a GB small forest ax. Not very pleased with it frankly. The handle isn't hickory anymore as far as I can tell. I think its ash, at least it looks like ash. They no longer say "prima hickory" on the handle. It has splinters lifting out in two places. Just splintering where the grain of the wood is coarse. I'm going to try to sand it down and refinish it. The edge came with two chips in it from a impact in shipping against the rivits of the sheath. I was able to hone one out but the other was too deep. It was sharp but really what value is that? I can make any ax razor sharp with a little time. Overpriced for what it is. Go with the Wetterlings.

Why didn't you send it back and get a replacement, or gotten your money back so you could get something else?

I got it from a Ebay vendor. They made it where it was going to cost me postage both ways to send back. I would have been out about 25 bucks postage because they wouldn't refund the first postage which was quite high. I decided it was best to just keep it and rework on the edge and handle. The handle was ok at first also. It wasn't till I had it for awhile that it started to splinter and that I noticed it wasn't really hickory.

I own these GB's: the small splitting axe, the large splitting axe, the Scandanavian forest axe, the large splitting maul, the splitting wedge and the tool sharpener kit. I live out in a wooded setting and these tools get used. I bought most of them from Lee Valley. I keep them right (free of rust, free of pitch, and coated for protection from rust) with the 3 piece Boeshield kit I got on Amazon. I like handmade things and these have a quality of the 'old world' to them that appeals to me. They cut like the dickens, but you have to maintain them, just like any other quality tool.

I think you got gypped. That's the problem with dealing with ebay vendors. No warranty and problems with shipping costs.

You should probably contact GB directly and see what they will do for you.
