gransfors bruks any good

I only have one GB, their historic two lugged bearded axe. It's a stunner and functional as well. I also have a Wetterlings wildlife hatchet. I know it's like comparing a Great Dane to a Chihuahua, but I think the Wetterlings is every bit as good as the GB in fabrication and steel quality, at a much lower price point.

it´s the same steel so I say you find nothing difference on that part .
more on surface and shape

Their terrible, perhaps the worst axes ever made, the construction methods are antiquated, the handles are poorly shaped and the finish is just plain appalling....:barf:

;)

In reality they they are probably the Rolls Royce of axes. They cut and handle wonderfully. They are delivered very very sharp. I own two and feel they are well worth the price.....:thumbup::thumbup:

And do they chop....WOW!

Hopefully you nuked that Feebay vendor with really harsh feedback.....They're just going to keep ripping folks looking for GB's off if not IMO. I've seen lots of GB products none that came with other than a Hickory handle. I say you got a knockoff at GB prices....

if you own an axe other than a gb you should at least own the gb book on use and care that they come with. " the axe book" i think its called.

I've been pretty happy with my GB mini, but I've been enamored with Timothy Potier's belt axe.

I have a GB Mini, and I think its perfect.

It feels like a natural extension of my hand, and is sharp enough to shave with {yes, I tried!} right from the box.

A beautiful tool which is a joy to own, carry and use {and to look at!}.

I agree, sharpen a wetterlings a little when you get it (my 3 were very sharp) and save 100$. But if you have the money drive a Cadillac, your choice.

With the incredible GBP/USD exchange rate I picked up my GB Small Forest for ~$65 from Ray Mears' website. Not much point in getting second best when the best is currently very affordable.

I have a GB Small Forest Axe and it's a beauty! The balance is fantastic and it was as sharp or sharper than any of the knives I have bought over the years.

Now I'm considering the hatchet. :D

I have 3 . Small forest, Scandinavian and a 35" Felling (just got it last week).
All 3 is perfect.

I have the hatchet and it is balanced perfectly. It came ridiculously sharp too. I just now bought a Small Forest Axe thanks to this tempting thread. I figured another couldn't hurt! :D

I've had the 35" felling axe for a couple of years. Felled trees and cut them up. Maples and firs.

Good tool, the real deal.

May get a small forest some day.

I have a Wetterlings Large Hunters, which is the poor mans GB Small Forest Axe. However, it came with perfect grain (perfect) and a straight bit. I prefer the Wetterlings sheaths, they are more robust but less aesthetic than the GB. I can sharpen my axe (you should not own an axe, IMO, if you can't sharpen it), so to me, better value. I sanded and soaked the handle in linseed oil.

Personally, I am 1000% happy with the axe. For me, after infusing this axe with my own tender loving care, I could never justify spending triple for a comparable axe (50 v 150).

However, if you have the dough, buy the SFA - I would, but I am in college lol
i am of the same opinion.
GB's are made for different types of wood anyway. so why blow the dough
Wetterlings made by SAW Swedish Axe Works
works for me
all good

I'm trying to chose between the Granfors Bruks Mini "Seem's on the small side at 10 1/4" Handle and 2 1/2" Cutting Edge & 11 OZ. or The Hunters Axe 19" Handle 3 1/4" Cutting edge 1 1/2 Lb. I think the Hunters Axe Is the right one for me, Doe's anyone own both of these "And If you had to choose between the two for all around Cutting performance whitch one would you pick ?

to the poster that got burned off ebay:

if you got a "GB" axe from ebay....i can pretty much gaurantee you it is one of the knockoffs that is coming out of china.

Buy form a reputable dealer like LEE VALLEY tools and you will get a great price and a REAL GB AXE.

my small forest axe was only $110 CDN. Thats like $80 USD. Very inexpensive and incredible high quality. As with ANY wood handled tool, a quick sanding and oiling with linseed is normal.

i would avoid the Hunter if you plan to use it for bushcraft/hiking etc. It was designed for skinning animals, quartering meat and chopping thru cartildge (knee joints). Although it will work for wood, that was not really its deisgn. Go for the small forest! i

I concur with Bushman5. The rounded skinning poll on the Hunter's Axe is not nearly as useful for pounding tent pegs, etc. Furthermore, the handle has a knurled finish to resist slippage when covered with blood/animal fat. I like the smooth grip of the Small Forest Axe better for wood chopping/splitting.

Thank's for the advice on the Granfors Bruks Forest Axe "Bushman5 & DancesWithKnives", It's the same size as the Hunter but better suited for all around Chopping & Camp chore's, Ya the rounded poll on the Hunters Axe was desighned for pounding & sofening Fur's & the Axe blade for Skinning, From the way It sound's you could put a Skinning edge on the Small Forest Axe also, I've done lot's of Skinning with my Gerber/Fiskars Hatchet and also my Fort Turner Trapper's Hawk I can get a Skinning Edge on them no problem, I think I'll go with the Small Forest Axe, Thank's Again & Take Care !
