I think this project marrys two of my favorites - GEC and a sodbuster

I am however supprised and a little disapointed that the traditional pattern isn't coming in stag

GEC do such great work in stag, orange just doesn't do it for me

now their frontier bone that would be nice...

That green one looks like something I`d like to buy let`s say 2 or 3 of. Is the ANY chance at all that in the not so distant future more colors will be availible?

I hope that this pattern gets into a normal rotation like the other patterns GEC Works with. After more time with mine, I like it more and more.

I don't know why it has to be limited to a 50 dollar plastic version. Its a nice knife. To me its just a shadow pattern. Maybe all the sodbuster connection, usually being thought of as a cheap work knife, has stuck this one into a low end bracket. When I would rather carry this one over any of my 73's, some costing 200$, I think that says something. The only reason I still carry my 73 once in a while is because I love stag. It doesn't stay in my pocket for even a full day either.

With all that said, its very easy for me to sit here and try to brainstorm what will work for GEC. I don't have to take the risk or invest any of the costs associated with setting up a new pattern like this. Either way GEC heads, I can't say much about it.

One last comment from me, I would easily pay 73 prices for a 71 with bone or wood or stag. They can pump out 73's variations all week long for very reasonable prices. Why couldn't they do the same with the 71? Maybe people don't see the 'sodbuster' as a worthy candidate?

I don't know, and like I said, I don't have much of a voice in what GEC does with their investments.

Kevin,
Hopefully after the black version is released and sold out, the head honchos (term used lovingly (: ) at GEC can get a better picture of how the 71 pattern might sell in the future. I really believe it would be a staple in their line; there aren't many choices out there for sodbusters, if GEC made several varieties I'm sure they would do well!

Nevertheless, I'll buy a black one (:

Hey Will,

I want to see the black delrin also. Don't get me wrong, I want to see the 50 dollar version. I really think it has its place. The delrin is a worry free material. I would just like to see natural materials also down the road. For the people that would be willing to pay the extra to get their favorite handle scales.

Its a tough one, because I like this knife as is. If they made a stag version and I picked one up its hard to say which one would see more pocket time. :)

I REALLY hate that I missed out on the orange one's, also like the look of the blue one. I'm not going to pick up any of the black ones just because I don't think of GEC as being a "cheap" knife maker. I'm with the rest of you in the fact that I would be willing to pay a little more for the #71 if they would just give us some variety in handle materials. My first choice would be an orange one but I wouldn't back away from stag, bone, or wood either.

Here, here! Exactly what he said:)

Some of you guys ought'a take a look at this offering. Spey blade and various covers available. It's a great knife and somewhat similar to the Bull Nose Work Knife.

Just my .02¢ but a pair of black delrin covers on the Bull Nose Work Knife by GEC does not make it a cheap knife. The Orange Covered version of the Bull Nose Work Knife I have is certainly not a cheap knife

By no means do I think this knife feels cheap with Delrin. Just to go on the record about that.

Oh I know that. I think someone above implied that the Bull Nose Work Knife was a cheap (not price wise but quality wise) knife and I was just pointing out that the cover color or material for that matter doesn't for my .02¢ contribute to a knife's quality in a case such as this.

That Farmer's Jack I posted a pic of would make a good alternative to the Bull Nose Work Knife if someone is loking for a knife with bone, stag, covers.

I agree with Kevin and Ed on this one.
This knife is no where near being a knife that lacks quality, in fact it oozes it. The 0-1 tool steel has really been an eye opener, it's just perfect for my needs. I think and this is completely unscientific, but I think that it defends against rust better than the 1095 blades. I have used one of my 1095 knives for a day, just to set it down and find a little orange the next day. This 0-1 knife has been put away wet and I see no rust after time.

After I got the strop from Kevin the edge has become like a light saber, it eats through everything. I just cut through a power cord like it wasn't even there. I really suggest picking one of these up if you can.

HUH??

I didn't do a good job of explaining myself, let me try again. I wasn't trying to say that these knives were in any way "cheap" or lacking quality materials, I simply meant that I don't like the fact the GEC is trying to hit a "magical" cheaper price point with these knives and are therefore using plain old black delrin. I'm also not picking one of these up because I just don't want the black handle, no other reason. Hopefully in the future GEC will offer more handle options on these, not just black all the time. I would seriously love to have one of the orange ones, maybe soon orange or blue will be an option along with more expensive materials.

I can understand where your coming from War Eagle. All I can say is if using flat Delrin leads to flat handles/covers and not nicely contoured like the test run then I would feel it was a downgrade. If not, it will just be a different color to me :)

rich, I'm sure the next run of these will be just as nice as the first. I'm just saying I'm not a fan of the black color is all. I thought the orange really set GEC's version apart from everyone else's as well as their choice of materials. I'm also not a fan of the "lower price piont" they are trying to hit, like I said before I would be happy to pay a little more for a GEC work knife. I guess I'm just mad I missed out on the orange one :grumpy::mad::D

There might be some 'scientific' basis for that. ;)

O1 steel doesn't have much chromium, at 0.40 - 0.60%, but it's still more than in 1095, which has none at all. The chromium is where most or all of the rust-resistance will come from, in this steel. There's also some nickel in O1, which might contribute to corrosion-resistance. Again, none of that in 1095.

I just sent an email trying to get on the early reserve for the black delrin, I hope I'm not too late. The shadow/sodubster pattern is my favorite as far as folding knives go, and I've been hoping GEC puts one out for a long time. I can't believe I missed the orange ones, but the black is still just fine by me.
