Great time in New England. (pic heavy)

What a great trip log, thanks so much guys. Makes me wistful of my days past when I used to do similar things up in northern Ontario. Damn, that shot of all those axes really makes me want to invest in a bigger axe. Looks like a great shelter that was built. As for Gene, it just sounds like you had one of those nights that happens to everybody. Sleep isn't always the easiest thing to come buy especially when having such a great time as you guys were obviously having!

looks like a good time all around. the shelter looks very well built and well insulated, i would imagine the snow that ended up on top of it just added to the insulation. looks like there were alot of good blade there as well. the snow is always fun, but tulsa OK hasnt seen any in a couple of years unfortunatly.

Now with you all standing around there with knifes and Siguy with what shovel.. Then in other pics you guys hold the poor puppy in your hands..... Is that pup safe around you people?????

That looks like such a great time, I'm really jonesing for a winter trip again. I'm also thinking of pulling out my dutch oven again after many years. I've been paring down my gear weight and the dutch oven was relegated to the corner of the basement. It really can be used for amazing cooking which is one of the best things about getting outdoors. Food tastes that much better when you are cold, hungry and tired. Thanks for sharing all the pics. I've got a lot of ideas to store away for the next time I get outdoors.

Sadie, Marcelo’s dog, can take care of herself.

I’ve seen her fend off two dogs twice her size, and do so fearlessly.

I suspect a few woodsbums with blades would not bother her at all.

Sadie says thank you Mike :).

We had an awesome time! As was said earlier the axes ruled the cutting here. I was very impressed with the Brian Andrews modified S & N camp ax. Very light weight, deep bites and NO binding. I'd sat it was equal in performance to the GB large forest ax. The edge (pun) going to the GB only due to the way way the handle ends on the GB give a nice bit of leverage on the end of your stroke. It kind of lets you relax your grip a bit more and therefore you get less fatigued. Even though the S & N and GB are ground a bit differently (S & N for American hard woods and GB for Scandinavian conifers) they both ate through some hard red oak. The king of the axes however was Simon's S & N large felling ax. Minimal effort was needed to eat through up to 9" thick oak.

I always kid myself into thinking I'll get to use my belt knife on these kind of trips, and I had planned to put my Brian Andrews bushcraft knife through its paces but other than chopping, all I did was socialize. I'll have to save my review for a solo hike/knife session :(.

The guys that came were all cool fellas. It was great to meet **** er I mean Halo, Gene's brother Adam and Andrew. It was great to see you again Gene and Simon. Oh yeah, Tony was there too. (just kidding Boo).

Awesome chicken soup.

That trip looked like a ton of fun. I didn't know Simon owned shoe. Thanks fro the picks glad you made out okay

Looks like an awesome trip. I am planning a trip like this in the futre and was curious as to any shelters that are built. Do you leave them up or take them down when you leave? If you take them down are you scatering the wood around?

in this case we were on private land, and we wanted to see how the shelter would hold up long term...so we left it.

in the past, whenever i use natural materials for shelter (typically for bedding) i will either burn them in the morning (to heat up water for cocoa and for breakfast) or scatter them in the woods. dead leaves get kicked around until they look more natural and green boughs get tossed all over the place...the needles will fall off eventually and they will just be more sticks on the ground.

Wow, wish I could have made it to that. Looks like an amazing trip. Great pics and report

Wow, Sadie looks so much like my pooch. Just the right size for a sleeping bag heater :D

I'm curious, since there were so many axes there at the same time, was there a consensus on which was the over all best? Did you folks pass the gear around and test each others items against your own?

I'm really jealous of this trip, I wanted to spend some time in the woods this weekend but, unfortunately, my water heater went out friday so my weekend was spent replacing it. Once again life got in the way. Anyhow, it looks like you all had a great time and that's what it's all about.

You met Sadie before at the Kent, CT gathering. She was only four months old at the time.

Did you leave my big tarp there as well?

Yes, unfortunately, we couldn't really get it out without wrecking the shelter, so we decided to all throw in some money and just buy you a new one. This way it would save our shelter and you get a new tarp.

I believe Simon should have one for you next time you too meet up.

yeah Tony, i will get a new tarp for you next time i see you. was that an 8x10? 8x12?

IMO, all of the axes (a mx of GB, S&N, Wetterlings, Fiskars, some stock, some modified, most resharpened) were equally used. All performed well. And yes one of the best things about the get together was people's insistance that other folks try their stuff.
