Hi everyone,

Spending this week at a training workshop, where I'm one of the trainers, for environmental chemists in the Caribbean. This time the work shop was held in a resort called the Reef Hotel just outside Progresso (about 1 h from Merida), Mexico. So far, most of my time has been spent in a tiny little room presenting power point slides. However, I did get a chance to escape a little bit here and there. The hotel is an all inclusive. That means they provide all the meals and you gotta work like hell to get a drink!

Here is the resort:

There really isn't anything apart from the resort and beach. However, there is a nice little horse path that winds through some of the beach/meadows areas out behind the place. Lots of lizards and a few larger iguana's.

Here is a little critter hole. You can see the steps coming out of it from the sand. I wonder what it is?

Lots of these critters everywhere. They are really fast. I can see Les Stroud smacking his lips at the thought.

We actually have a field excursion planned for Friday so hopefully I'll be able to provide additional shots later in the week.

Very nice pics kgd! I'm always envious of those with professions that involve working meetings or conferences in interesting locales - my conferences always take me to urban centres.

Enjoy the warm weather and sunshine! And don't forget to take some knife photos when you're in the field!

All the best,

- Mike

The Houston newspaper just had a piece in the travel section about Progresso and the new resorts. Typically people go to Cancun or the resorts farther south. Looks like they are pretty nice from your pictures and maybe cheaper.

Progresso, huh? Pick me up some soup while you're there.... :D

Seriously though, cool pics! Enjoy your stay, and take advantage of the "all inclusive" deal!

Awesome pics Kgd... you must really hate your job what with them "forcing" you to spend time at some random resort in Mexico ... the nerve

I'm just jealous :D hope you have a great time.

K thats beautiful man, im glad you made it down. would mind If I took a few of the scenery shots for a personal collection?

Have fun, hope everything goes well.

I can't believe the rough conditions you're enduring. Wouldn't you much rather be back home, what with the snow and cold? I've spent some time near Progresso, and it's really a beautiful area. The same natural beauty you can find around Cancun without the frat boy party atmosphere. I definitely would love to get back to the Yucatan. One thing I picked up when I was there was a hammock. Ask around and find out where the locals get theirs, otherwise you'll get ripped off.

Just came back today folks. I had uploaded these shots earlier in the week but didn't post them yet. In the end, I ended up spending a lot more work time than play time. Oh well, it is good to be back home and with family again! Even having to leave the tropical climate behind, sometimes you just miss your own bed!
