Grimsmo Knives, why such a big hype !

I think that their reputation for extremely good action, combined with limited supply, means everyone wants to try one and a lot of people are willing to pay more to get it. I assume that they intended to sell these for $650, but when they saw the secondary markets decided to exploit it while they can. I can't blame them for that - its better that money goes in their pockets rather than to resellers.

Still, $650 is already at the higher end of the midtech market. I don't think the $950 pricing for a base model will be sustainable once the initial demand is satisfied.

I've had a few knives that drop shut easily (Shiro, Thorburn) and I learned pretty quickly that that's an easy way to get your thumb bitten if you're not very careful. Kinda sticking away from them at this point :p

Well, nobody else makes a "overbuilt" titanium framelock flipper these days, so if you want one, they are the only game in town. So they can charge whatever they want.
Wut? Is that sarcastic or are you being serious? Cause if so you are very wrong.

It is what all the cool kids are doing. You gotta pay to play.

Sometimes you want your knife to be a shovel and other times you want your shovel to be a knife. ;) I just cannot get into that blade on the Norseman.

Their knives seem like they're made for people who don't actually carry a knife everyday.

I have no issue with their business model, after-all that is what they are. Grimsmo isn't devious or stealing designs, they just cornered a niche in the market. Still, there's no way I'd be willing to pay those prices for a knife that wouldn't see any belt/pocket time.

Could you imagine the full custom blade you could buy with 2k?! It'd be incredible!

I actually just got an email saying I won a raffle to buy a Norseman (bronze with reverse honeycomb and blue accents), and yeah at $925 I'll have to pass. Though I was tempted to flip it, but that's still a lot of money to sit on until it sells.

Until it sells? You could probably list it at something modest ($1200 or so) and it'd sell before it even got to you.

Yeah I know, but pay day is two weeks away and I can't risk it. Just going to have to let it loose to the next winner. Besides, if I sold it for $1,200+ then I'm just part of the problem that this thread is complaining about. :) Plus I legitimately want a Norseman (though I want a plain one with no color) and Rask (same), so I'm just going to go back on the raffle list for another chance.

Edit: Words.

As Mo2 Mo2 pointed out, their YouTube channel has a lot to do with it. When you have the opportunity to connect with someone, via social media or other channels, the purchases become emotional more so than rational. Emotional is where the big money comes out to play.

With that being said, they produce incredibly well made knives and have inspired a new generation of CNC machinists/knife makers. I agree that eventually supply will catch up with demand and secondary market prices will fall.

As with any company or knife maker, as long as the secondary stays equal to direct prices, they're fine. Once secondary drops below direct prices, they're in trouble.

there, there.. YMMV
I do appreciate that those guys are trying to do their own thing etc. but the Norseman is ugly, awkward and useless as a knife IMO. the Rask is an improvement but still looks kind of underwhelming , boxy crude and unrefined. Grimsmo bros might have a future if they continue to self improve but it took them literally years to introduce Rask. They charge as if they are on the same level as some other established makers which is a travesty.

That's the funny thing.... what's ugly to some is beautiful to others :)

For me (and likely many/most rask/norseman owners), I think both knives look incredible and perform extremely well. In fact a lot of my "non-knife" friends comment on how "cool" the Norseman looks and really like the machine work on the blade. The intricate milling inside the Rask and the hardware is noticed by even non-knife people

Value is subjective I guess and would I pay $1k for a Norseman? No. $650? Probably. I like their unique design even though I am not emotionally invested in the makers (Have yet to check out their Youtube channel). If you have expendable income, and your spouse is fine with it :), then go for it if it makes you happy.

Thought I'd share some funny messages about Grimsmo that a (non-forum) knife enthusiast friend (loves CRK) texted me after seeing the pictures. (He is in red, my response in black.)

Here are the pictures he saw:

"I hate when information cards have childlike hand writing on them."
"For $1000 I expect pleasant handwriting."

"Meh, doesn't bother me any."

An hour goes by...

"A friend of mine used to get hand writing assignments. One of them was addressing envelopes for $.12 an envelope. At $.12 a production card, I think a knife maker charging $1000 can find somebody with neater hand writing to fill out the card."
"Can't let it go can you?"
"Fuck no! Learn some fucking penmanship, Farrier."
"I had to zoom in to read 'reverse honeycomb'. Know why? Guy's penmanship is atrocious."
"Atrocious."
"Add 50 cents overhead to each knife. Do it once a week. If he makes 10 knives a week it'll cost him $5."

"Fuck that, it is already a $925 knife, I'm not paying $925.50, that's a deal breaker."
"That's why ol' Erik 'I write like I'm 6' Grimsmo needs to eat 50 cents on his knives and hire someone with solid longhand."
"Or put out shit cards which will keep me from dropping $1000 on a knife."
"What's a 'Norsemdn'?"
"No one knows but Erik 'I write like Corky from Life Goes On' Grimsmo."
"What's a 'Norsemdn'?

"That's how they write in Canada man." (I couldn't resist a jab at our fam to the north.)
"I've heard of grammar Nazis, but never penmanship Nazis."

So yeah, I don't think he'll be buying a Grimsmo any time soon.

I will say they have easily the best action I have felt on a knife. I was trying to justify buying it and hoped I would have a production knife that was as nice. But...not even close its like glass. Seb is not smooth compared to these. Its also cool and you get your money back if you want to sell. Heres mine and it glows in the dark. Im a sucker for glowing things

The $650 new price point no longer exists they raised prices. Maybe a used one someone hated and beat up would go for that much but...even then I doubt it.

Flat detent attributes to its action. U guys know any other knives with a flat detent?

Goto about 10min in on the disassembly video.

@North Arm Knives
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...-usa-customers-save-on-exchange-rate.1503345/

i have one of these thats basically the same action.

Rubins titanium and tools Rone or Rune I forget. its not a flat detent either. but it doesnt get in the way.

and then the zt 0562CF which the action is amazing on also. not a flat detent. but once you get past the detent it drops shut.
