Grimsmo Knives, why such a big hype !

Grimsmo knives are interesting. I briefly considered getting on the list for a Rask around when they came out, but not something I would carry or use so I decided against. I'll be waiting to see what other designs they come out with. Hopefully the trend towards $1000+ doesn't continue. :/

The Skaha by North Arm Knives on the other hand is something I could see myself using. Very similar to the Grimsmo's Rask, just more utilitarian and not as cost prohibitive. Too bad the demand skyrocketed after Nick's video otherwise I would probably have picked one up by now.

2 things that always jumped out to me about the Norseman: 1. That blade shape... WTF. Literally looks like a horse !@#$. And B. The texturing on the blade... alright a horse !@#$ that's ribbed for her pleasure? I can't help but think the Norseman is the result of some amazing trolling. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thought I'd share some funny messages about Grimsmo that a (non-forum) knife enthusiast friend (loves CRK) texted me after seeing the pictures. (He is in red, my response in black.)

Here are the pictures he saw:

"I hate when information cards have childlike hand writing on them."
"For $1000 I expect pleasant handwriting."

"Meh, doesn't bother me any."

An hour goes by...

"A friend of mine used to get hand writing assignments. One of them was addressing envelopes for $.12 an envelope. At $.12 a production card, I think a knife maker charging $1000 can find somebody with neater hand writing to fill out the card."
"Can't let it go can you?"
"Fuck no! Learn some fucking penmanship, Farrier."
"I had to zoom in to read 'reverse honeycomb'. Know why? Guy's penmanship is atrocious."
"Atrocious."
"Add 50 cents overhead to each knife. Do it once a week. If he makes 10 knives a week it'll cost him $5."

"Fuck that, it is already a $925 knife, I'm not paying $925.50, that's a deal breaker."
"That's why ol' Erik 'I write like I'm 6' Grimsmo needs to eat 50 cents on his knives and hire someone with solid longhand."
"Or put out shit cards which will keep me from dropping $1000 on a knife."
"What's a 'Norsemdn'?"
"No one knows but Erik 'I write like Corky from Life Goes On' Grimsmo."
"What's a 'Norsemdn'?

"That's how they write in Canada man." (I couldn't resist a jab at our fam to the north.)
"I've heard of grammar Nazis, but never penmanship Nazis."

So yeah, I don't think he'll be buying a Grimsmo any time soon.
I love your friend. I'm a fountain pen and handwriting enthusiast. I was literally LOLing reading this.

I love their YouTube channel but the knives have zero place in my rotation. The knives are toys/jewelry with an edge plain and simple. If someone put a plain Sebenza 21 next to a Norseman or Rask and they were all the same price I'd choose the Seb 100/100 times. Just going off of the fasteners and captured stop pin build I would put the knives (all other knives/designs considered) in the contemporarily typical "underbuilt" category. A Paramilitary 2 is likely a more robust folder. Don't get me wrong. I like my knives to be sexy. But I like my knives to be foremost designed to be great KNIVES and their other "features" should be seriously evaluated and scrutinized. Just the captured/internal stop pin alone is a complete fail and deal breaker for me. The material removed from the blade tang is utterly ridiculous. The Shirogorov 111 gets it as right as possible with the pin in the blade and the path machined from the liner material. Still it is an uncleanable area for gunk to build up in the worst possible place, easily causing tolerance/lockup issues unless disassembled. complete. design. fail.

I actually just got an email saying I won a raffle to buy a Norseman (bronze with reverse honeycomb and blue accents), and yeah at $925 I'll have to pass. Though I was tempted to flip it, but that's still a lot of money to sit on until it sells.
That really is to bad, I saw a person make an extra 1000 of the one they had just acquired... I would buy it just to flip it the next day... even for a couple extra 100 bucks

Just because it has a great action that doesn't mean it's price is appropriate...

The Grimsmo knives are a a joke. They're crude in design (Basically took 2 platforms off a Google image search and modified them), and are more for kids who don't have a brain than actual knife enthusiasts. They can charge their pricing because of their brainless fanbase along with the fact, that they spent close to 500k for two CNC machines so they charge their customers extra to pay off the debt that they made because of their idiotic decisions. (Any modern 3 axis CNC milling machine can 3D mill..) Their original pricing was ridiculous and their current pricing is still ridiculous. You're charging (now) $900 for two slabs of Titanium (Probably 50% of the current folders are made with Titanium..) and a slab of glorified powdered 440C. The engraving on the knife is cheap and ugly, it's a cost saving measure that they've said themselves. You have two options for their knives. Titanium Damascus or Titanium, along with RWL-34 or RWL-34 Damascus. Those knives have maybe 2 hours of hand time in total... Sharpening and Assembling. Their profit margins must be amazing...

Tell us how you really feel. I mean, don't hold back. Be honest. :)

In my book, if they are able to sell "sub par" knives at those prices, they must be some damn good businessmen, and more power to them.

Some random whiner hating on their knives means nothing.

Also, materials are not the main factor that determine value for mechanical systems, you should know better than that.

Agreed. I love when people have absolutely no idea what it takes to bring those materials together decide prices.
I’m in HVAC for 40 years and it still makes me laugh when customers want to tell me what I should charge.
Quick example: replacing an expansion valve in a home AC system. The valve costs around $60, the price to install it is probably around $650. When customers hear that their heads explode. But it will take around 4 hours and the specialty tools needed are extremely expensive.
When you start digging into what goes into getting those materials to look and function like a knife, the pricing becomes apparent.

I'd consider charging 900.00

Yup, and now look at what they are going for. Don't get me wrong, I would love to purchase a Rask but not at the cost of the secondary market. Once supply hits the demand the bubble will burst and price will drop. Just like Hinderer knives a few years ago...
I agree and at the going prices I'm definitely willy to wait tell then lol.:D

there, there.. YMMV
I do appreciate that those guys are trying to do their own thing etc. but the Norseman is ugly, awkward and useless as a knife IMO. the Rask is an improvement but still looks kind of underwhelming , boxy crude and unrefined. Grimsmo bros might have a future if they continue to self improve but it took them literally years to introduce Rask. They charge as if they are on the same level as some other established makers which is a travesty.

Hey if peope are willing to pay it. Better than having some soviet board that decides knife prices.
