Grinders - Burr King/Hard Core vs. Wilton/Bader/KMG

I bought a BurKing (1-1/2 HP Variable speed DC.) from Koval several months ago. Mostly becaues I knew they were reputed to be solid workers and smooth tracking. Plus I wanted to be able to lay it down and grind on a horizontal platen. Charlie Clifton in Georgetown swears by them and he has several. He grinds more knives in a month than I do in a year. I have found mine to be very smooth and powerful. Changing belts is a dream. I dont ever see myself changing wheels. Charlie says eets a beech anyway.

I bought a Burr King some 10-11 years ago from Tru-Grit, then the DC Variable speed motor, and almost all the attachments.
Bought a house, so now I have a garage to work in.
Just got the pyroceram platens and have to put them on.
Got 90+ belts for it now.
Someone please kick me in the ass to get me started...  :D

Could you explain how you do the horz., grinding on a BK?

I'm also curious about the wheel changing remark. I'm not doubting anyone here, but I change wheels on mine all the time. Just takes a few minutes.

But then, maybe you're talking about something else entirely, and that's what I want to know.:eek:

Thanks!:D

I noticed that their website domain has expired too. Bummer because I've been hovering on their site picking out options for mine. :D I'm sure that Rob will get the site back up soon.

You may need to call on Monday. I'm not sure that they're up on weekends.

While I can't say I know a lot about the Square Wheel, HardCore, Bader, or Burr King or any others except for what I have owned or used and I don't know really how they compare to each other, what I do know is this. When I was looking to get a new grinder I asked like 20 makers what they recommended and the KMG was the one the majority of them told me to go with. None of these others other than the BIII were even mentioned. More people mentioned and recommended Bob Dozier's machine than the BIII to me and it was still no where near all the guys saying KMG, KMG, KMG.

I bought the KMG. I can see quite clearly why so many told me to go with it. Its just my opinion but as far as bang for the buck goes I felt like the KMG just offered more than the others for less $. I bought mine and Adam Michael's MAP arm and still had less in it than the others were quoted to me before the MAP arm was added. Go figure. Again, I don't know much about the others. I'm sure they are nice in all the ways you guys mention. If there is a draw back to the KMG its the fact that its not stainless steel. I should have painted mine the day it arrived before assembly. Hindsight as they say is 20/20.

Yes I realize it is old but this is the one that pops up when I searched for KMG ginders and figured someone here would know if they were still in buisness. I paid for a grinder on their site fri and now it is down. It kind of worries me since I couldnt get hold of them when I called fri.

They are still in business and doin fine. They probably closed up early Friday, or just too busy to answer the phone. All's good, just call Monday.

I can understand your concern (keep in mind you ordered at the end of the week and Rob is NOT some huge corporation), but trust that Rob Frink (owner/operator at Beaumont) is as good as people get... in both his products and his customer service.

I have bought two of his grinders since this thread was started, along with all kinds of attachments and discs.... VERY happy with every dealing I've had with Rob, and the grinders! :D

Rob is GOOD PEOPLE!!! :) :) :)

Have they gone out of buisness? I can get on their website and the phone number I have for them just rings and rings. I am trying to order a KMG grinder.

Hi Everyone...Yes, we are still around and Kickin' :D

We were out of the shop down at Ron Claiborne's annual Hammer-in. It is one of my personal favorite hammer-ins...ever ....and this was the 10th year! I wasn't going to miss it for anything.......so we closed the shop late Thursday afternoon with a loaded truck and headed south for East Tennessee. Again, it was a terrific event and well worth the effort attend. I'm so glad I went!

I just returned home and started checking email.

Yep, I just saw that the domain name expired...so I've renewed it. But it might take a business day for processing before www.beaumontmetalworks.com is back on line. Hang in there...ot phone me in the shop.

Monday mornings are always very busy on the phone but we will be there from 9-5 EST....so please try to get through. 614/291-8876

I've got some new product ideas, thanks to some great input and suggestions at the hammer-in. Also, I think Beaumont Metal Works will donate a handful of grinders to terrific cause that is doing great things for custom knife making. More details later...

I'm whipped...and going to go take a nap.....

Hi Phil, it was nice to talk to you this morning. We should be able to pack and ship your grinder in a few days.

Thanks for the patience.

I have a KMG Clone no weld all machined fitted and machine taper bolted together anodized and powder coat painted with A 1,2,3 and 10 inch contact wheels also flat platten and a killer steady rest. I only run a 1hp and havent stalled it out or had a problem . The only problem was getting one.

Hey Rob, be careful with that. There are companies that buy up expired domain names just as they expire and resell them or keep them and sell links to other sites from them. Definitely worth it to make sure it's renewed before it expires.

ya i had it happen to me :(. when i saw that your site was down i checked to make sure it was not up for grabs. if it was i would have called you and if you did not pick up i would have bought the address for you.

Thanks guys! I've got to tip my hat to Atlanta Virtual. I remember about 5 years ago, Ed Caffery had his domain grabbed. About the same time, BeaumontMetalWorks expired...but I'm hosted with AV and they have some security protocalls so that some scumbag couldn't grab it right away.

Now 5 years later, it expired again. AV shut the site down, sent me a notice...I dropped a couple quarters in slot...bingo bammo...we're back in biz.

If you are not using Atlanta Virtual for your web site hosting...you should.
