Griptilian / Paramilitary

Interesting thread:) I have BM Mini-Grip, Griptillian (Sheepsfoot/thumbhole) and a Paramilitary. Up here, the difference in cost was between the Griptillian and Paramiltary was pretty drastic, but cost aside, my vote goes to the Paramilitary. The primary reason(s) is the ergos - in the harder tasks, the paramilitary, for me, just works better with the larger handle. A little "friendlier on the job" with it's smaller blade. I agree that these two are kind of in different classes, as well. Agreed that an Endura would be a closer fit to the Grip. I found the Griptillian, compared to even the Mini-Grip is not as well balanced as the Paramilitary. But, I've also found that the slightly larger blade on the Grip also has merits. I've found both are bit big for front pocket carry, but fine in cargo pants. Part of my regular EDC blades are the Mini-Grip and a Delica and those two are surprisingly close in their utility for the things I do. Yesterday, we were staging a couple of rackmount servers, and both got used quite heavily. Delica won:D

Steven,I have Benchmades in s30v and spydercos, rust maybe but i've not had the s30v from spyderco chip out.

I reviewed the Paramillie last year and found it overrated from the price point.

The good thing about it is the lock. Simple and strong.

Next good thing is the pivotscrew. Better than any Benchmade.

I like the simplicity of the G10 handle and the blade shape.

I didn´t like the ergos. They are to much "thought out" and have forced my hand into grip positions. Instead the Griptilian has ergos wich offer plenty secure grip positions. Mel Pardue is the better knife maker :D . I would dremel away the but at the end of the handle.

I didn´t like the way the edge was ground. A large 30° angle flat. Benchmade has done many better jobs on other models like the 550, the 520, the 140. There may be others but thats the models i know.

These two negative points are keeping me away from it, even though i wish Benchmade would bump up the pivot.

The only Benchmade S30V i have is not that satisfying for my. But i have read about this regardless of the manufacturer, so my vote doesn´t bases on the steel grade.

The Griptilian in the 550 version is a great knife.

Great ergos.

Great price.

Great steel.

Great blade shape (i feel like a kitchen samurai).

Better (thinner) edge.

Movable clip.

Sounds plastically but is as strong as a full metal folder.

Simple but thick pivot screw wich must be loctited.

My vote goes to the Griptilian.

Blop ... just to confirm, you found the Griptilian's edge thinner than the Para's?

Did everyone else who has both find the same?

I have had both, and I currently still have the 550 and the Ritter Grip.

I think the Ritter Grip has a thinner edge than the Para but I'm not sure that 550 is thinner. I don't know.

My S30V is top notch....no rust at all with no special care--but to be fair, I don't even take any care of my carbon steel blades and they never rust either.

Came amazingly sharp, by far the sharpest of any knife I've ever been near, seems to have comparable edge retention to my D2 knives.

I'm not a steel snob, and thus, this is my first affair with S30V, but it's worth the hype. The edge retention is astounding for stainless.

The blade is so much more substantial than my minigrips....haven't compared it with the full sized grip, but the blade length is more close to the minigrip anyway.

I'd just like to add that the best comparison to the full sized grip is the d`allara drop point....similar lock, scales, blade length...its oversized, relative to the grip, but not too much...the price is dead on too.

I totally agree with you on that. Almost the same lock too :)

I guess the older versions are not so easy, but the newer D'Allera Drop Point is better as they have redone the area by the ball bearing lock to allow for more access.

I would choose a full sized Griptilian over a Para-Military any day of the week.

IMO, the Axis-lock is much better than the Compression-lock.
I also like the blade design of the 551.

What I really don't like is the hollow sound of the 551's handles.
They're strong and tough, but they sound cheap.

As for G-10 being better than FRN...I used to believe so but I've revised my thinking on that one.
It is probably stronger than FRN in some respects, but weaker in others.
I can tell you that G-10 does'nt fare as well from high fall impacts as FRN does.

Yes!

The Paras was as thick as on my 806 but with a 30° edge, thereagainst the 806 has a 40°. So around .8mm at the top of the V compared to .5mm on the Griptilian.

V counted on top of the V not at the tip (how could i).

BTW, the slicing power on the para is remarkable. But i found, that the pras edge has a very little straight part. It is a winner in peeling things and cutting moves like that wich may take a lot of all cutting moves at all. On whittling i found it not as good.
