Griptilian

Anyone with Griptilian experience?

I have a yellow mini grip in 154CM. I got it in December. I used it on a construction job yesterday. So far so good.

I'm a little scared the spring will break, because of a few things I've read here. I like the Axis, but the spring worries me. That said, it's a must have knife along with Spyderco Native and Kershaw Leek.

I have both a Cabelas D2 mini and a Ritter S30V mini that I alternate as my EDC. I love them both. They are great little knives.

There are two springs and if one breaks the other will keep your knife functioning safely until you can send it off to be repaired.
I use Axis Locks almost exclusively and have never had an Omega spring break.

First, I must admit that my Griptilian experience is limited, but regarding the hole vs stud question, I don't think it makes a real functional difference. I would tend to go with the stud, because it is less like the "borrowed" Spydeco design, and with the Axis lock, you can easily "flick" the blade open without even using a stud or hole.

I have had a 440C thumb stud plain black Gryp for years. It gets little use. The 'Axis Lock' is great - the knife is mechanically undoubtedly superior to the Spydie S30V Native, which was less than 2/3 it's cost - even if they were bought 3+ years apart. However, the Native came - and has remained - unbelieveably sharp, while the BM was not impressive at all in that department. In fact, a run-of-the-mill, now $25, Buck 110 Folding Hunter set a much higher standard in sharpness. That was the reason I went with a Cabela's 'Alaskan Guide' (S30V) Buck 110 rather than their D2 version of the Gryp (Okay... 'Grip'!) - and saved money! Of course, I also don't buy serrated blades.

I have a Gryp - but I am not it's greatest fan... and most likely won't buy another. In fact, I was much more impressed with the only other BM I have, a 201 'Activator+' in D2, a nice 'basic bushcraft' sort of fixed blade.

I have 2 Ritter Grips (small & large) in M2, a mini in D2 and a large in 154CM. I like the M2 the best, then D2 and 154CM.
I love that M2!

the factory edge grinds and sharpness on my one PE Griptilian and one PE MiniGrip (154cm steel) were impressive

I was kind of disappointed with the edge holding on my new 551. I sliced some paper and about a foot of cardboard from a box just to test the sharpness. It cut extremely well, but I noticed afterward that the blade was chipped in several places. Is cardboard really that rough? It's possible that the knife was chipped before I ever opened it, but that doesn't seem likely.

It just might be weakened steel on the factory edge. Give it a good sharpening and it should be fine afterwards.

Thanks for the info... Are you saying the factory edge weakened the steel, or is it just from the edge cooling faster in the heat treatment? ie, could I just send it in for another "factory edge?"

I just got my third Grip, a sheepsfoot blade in 154 CM. The Grip is one of my favorite folders, good all around knife.

Gave up my venerable old Endura to my son-in-law a couple of years ago for a mini-Griptillian and never looked back. It keeps a better edge, works much smoother (what does Benchmade know about blade bushings that Spyder doesn't know?), and I can find it in my gear because it's yellow! The oval hole is less positive than the round...but it looks much cooler! It's with me every day!

I like the Griptilian series....really I do.
But I just can't live with those handles!

If only Benchmade would make a G-10 handle Griptilian, or even an aluminum handle one....:(

I've EDCed a Griptilian (the 550) for a while with no problems. My father has a 551 from a few years back; it has 440-C steel. No problems reported with that one either.
