Here is a Griptillian that I just finished up for a fellow forumite!

This started out as flat ground all black Doug Ritter Griptillian. I was asked to thin the blade out and hollow grind it.

It mics between .010 and .011 just slightly behind the cutting edge. I did a slight swedge the full length of the clip just for asthetics. I think it turned out pretty good!!

What do you think??

Tom

gee, I guess that looks alright, if you're into that sort of thing

:p :D

PS: your PMs are full, I can't send you a reply until you delete an old one

Wow. This has me doing some thinking.... I might have a knife or three that would benefit from such treatment... Hmmm....

Beautiful work!

Man, he is talented with a grinder and and what an eye for aesthetics!
That grind line is at just the right height. Higher or lower and I don't think it works nearly as well. :D

There's something about M2 and a Tom Krein grind that make me wish that M2 was a standard Krein steel.

Very nice work, Tom. I talked to you a couple months ago about thinning out a Spyderco Jess Horn ZDP (Cliff Stamp's, actually), similar to what you did with his Fallkniven U2, and it should be out to you in a couple weeks, possibly with my Spyderco Native also. I will call you again to verify shipping and pricing. Again, very nice work on that blade!

What was it before?

That is a very bad idea. I am warning you strongly, if you get Krein to do similar mods on your knives your perception of acceptable cutting performance will take a hell of a radical shift away from normality.

Thanks Everyone!

Mike,
Give me a call today if you can.

Cliff,
If I remember correctly it was a little over .030" just behind the edge.

Sodak,
No need to bribe me! Send me the steel and tell me what you want!

Thom,
How do you like the sound of CPM M-4???

:D

For the way I cut and throw a micro-bevel on everything, it'll probably be everything I've ever wanted in a high-hardness steel, but the same can be said for 1095, 1080, and O1.

edited to add:
I like M2 the most, though.

That has already happened with the U2 you lent me. My world will never be the same! That is why I want the Native included, at least to hollow it back out, and probably thin it out to similar geometries to the U2 & Jess Horn, as it seems to be durable enough with my flat to the stone grind that I think it's worth pushing it a little, and it will make an interesting comparison to the ZDP & SGPS at hopefully very similar geometries (who knows how the saber & swedge grinds will effect what can be done). If it crumbles I will go to Wal Mart and buy another, or better yet just get the Native 3 in VG-10 and give it the flat to the stone treatment, as the Native 3 ergos and wire clip beat the snot out of the Native 1. I will have your Jess Horn really thinned out (hopefully similar to the U2), and I may have him just put the hollow back in my Jess Horn for sharpening (it is basically a flat/saber now), but leave the angle where it is for comparison purposes to your soon to be super thin Jess Horn.

Thanks for the talk, Tom, I'll send them off in the next couple days. I'll put notes with each knife with edge widths to shoot for, I'll measure the U2 and probably use those for references. Any input on this, Cliff? I think I want both of the Jess Horns to get the full treatment to be as thin as the U2, if possible. I would ideally like the Native that thin, but am wondering how the steel will handle it. I was hoping to do a head to head test with all the knives having as similar geometry as possible, but the steel properties may throw a monkey wrench in that pursuit. Either way a Tom Krein grind will greatly improve the performance and ease of sharpening of the knives, as the U2 is a marvel of cutting efficiency and has me addicted to high and thin hollow grinds.

Mike

I'd like to get something done under .010", but am still trying to decide on what knife. I still want to do general utility with the Rittergrip and didn't ask Tom to go thinner. Maybe when the next zdp Caly Jr's come out I'll see what one feels like and if I want to go paper thin for a light use blade.
