growing weary of the sprint run game

I saw that one. Things did get changed up last year if I remember correctly, there are different levels.

Just out of curiosity, what's the buy-in for this? Full MSRP for every knife?
From what I recall, you join through a dealer, you might pay what the knife sells normally through that dealer. There are threads out there with only bits and pieces of information. I have not seen any details on the Spyderco site on this.
Close enough. You "join" through Spyderco. That is to say you get the membership application from them, and return it to them. However, you have to specify a dealer to receive your knives when you submit the application and you should make sure the dealer is willing to do so before you do that. Some may not want to be bothered, some who are willing may want a security deposit, but most who will do it charge the same as they'd charge other customers for the same knife.

Aside from that, no "buy in" per se, but I'd bet the total for all the Sprints, exclusives, and new models which came out in 2010 would add up to five grand or so at average US street prices.

True. Here's a link to what's probably the most pertinent post about the new setup.

Some sell, some don't.
Dont just pick on the few winners as examples.
When in doubt, buy 'em all.

Picked up some nice sprint runs over the years. I like the collectable status of these pieces. It makes me happy when i see other Spyderco fans buy these knives and find their own joy.

What is less cool are the ebay vultures who buy the sprint runs in numbers and turn them around for a profit. There is no love of the blade there, just love of money. Guess that's part of a capitalist society, but it brings me no joy, and sometimes makes it harder to get hold of some of these knives :)

You are so right. Capitalism is a totally corrupt, inefficient and evil system. We should all be buying only Chinese knives. The Chinese know how to produce a quality product in a quality economic and social system.

Errr...not. :barf: ;)

I don't think he's bashing capitalism, just the greedy opportunists that come with it. ;)

Maybe...but, honestly, if you want the upside, you have to put up with some of the downside, and the alternatives are MUCH worse. There is no perfect solution or system...at least not one that involves humans. Maybe if Hal ran the economy, it would be different... :D

Oh, of course. I agree but not about HAL. :D

We do have to take the bad with the good but it doesn't mean that we can bitch about the bad. ;)

I'm of the opinion that capitalism is fine as long as people are fairly honest. The issue I believe is the pursuit of maximum profit over ethics and quality, and perhaps the general culture built up around this. It's (obviously) easiest to see what comes out of this at Wall Street and in the Finance sector.

On topic, I've been angry at myself for not getting the Para 2 in 20CP but through a trade I managed to score a brown military and I'm loving it.

I like the Sprints runs. It lets me get knives with different handle colors, materials and try different steels that I would not be able to get otherwise. I dont buy from flippers so dont care what they do. I dont care what speculators or collectors do either. I get the ones I want one way or another. If you missed out plan better or be prepared to pay more later. :)

Everybody's entitled to their opinions, but i think some of the naysaying is a bit much.

I like sprints! I won't whine...unless of course i don't get my favorites! But i'll try to keep it to a minimum even then.

my last spyderco purchases have been only sprint runs. only direct from dealers. but even if i miss one i'm not going to cry, if i want, i'll pay.

i think hunting rare discontinued spydies is a rather interresting hobby, i have quite a few in my "i want it bad" list. among them i've catched a used S90V milie that's going to be pimped, still want a NIB one ($$$$), a 440v SE one, both color C95 .... those will all cost me more than msrp (perhaps not the 440V SE milie ? ) but that's the game.

anyway collecting knives is a hobby, i hope no on will say that getting a limited edition spydie is a life or death situation, if a hobby irritates you ... drop it.

Seriously, instead of complaining about something you can't control, why not just appreciate the fact that such a quality maker is willing to mix it up and try different things all the time, and give us an opportunity to share in the experience. Just because you have poor discipline doesn't mean the rest of us that can limit our buying criteria enough to keep the credit cards from exploding, doesn't mean Spyderco is doing anything wrong. Instead they should be applauded for their tireless R&D efforts and ability to thrive in such lousy economic conditions. Cheers, and oh, first post :)
