Grylls vs Bamboo

Nice having a film crew around sometimes. I suspect he has a lot of accidents as he is a bit careless at times.

Les Stroud cut his finger down to the bone in the jungle and he stayed to finish the show......

Damn, that sucks. The jungle is no place for those kind of injuries. I am not much for Bears Show, but Im sure hes a good guy, and I hope he he didnt suffer any permanent nerve damage.

He might "fake" some stuff, but the dude is hardcore. Hes done more then anyone I know. Hes got a great life.

Ya know it wasnt bamboo, it was those damn hotel jelly packets.

hehe;):p

I don't like seeing anyone injured but the pretence of this show is to show how to survive. In a real situation you obviously don't have the luxury of being airlifted out so I'd have a lot more respect if he stayed and worked through it and showed the techniques necessary to keep going.

This is the second opportunity he's missed out on isn't it? Didn't he recently have a fall and break something? Collar bone was it? Again he was airlifted out instead of showing how to deal with the injury.

I agree

At what cost? The fact of the matter is, it is not a real survival situation. It is a tv show. With an injury like that, it can quickly become gangerous in the jungle, and he was c/o possible nerve damage. No "tv show" is worth losing a couple fingers or worse. As far as the collarbone break, he probably could have trucked through it, but it could have hampered him phisically and he could have had a deadly accident. Ive broke mine 2 times, and it hampers your physicality quite a bit. Especially w/o pain meds. In the end, it is just a tv show. Hes practicing, and ugh.."teaching"(I hate callin what he does that), survival skills, but he is a father, and husband, and I wouldnt risk seein my family ever again for a tv show.

Im not a fan of his, but I am a fan of human beings.

All adrenaline junkies seem hardcore until they kill themselves. I don't wish anyone harm but when you do stupid things for the thrill of it, you're asking for it. Free climbers die from falls, base jumpers die from the ground, and grizzly men die from grizzly bears. Grylls will most likely die from dysentery from sucking on animal dung. There's a reason the Darwin awards exist.

Yeah, but SAS training is no joke, and neither is everest... To me that qualifies as hardcore...

IMO it's only prudent that if he's going to show something that he also shows the possible consequences of it. Someone somewhere will take his show as gospel. When they try it and things don't turn out like in the edited version they watched why should they be SOL? Where's their airlift to safety? He should show both sides and include dealing with the consequences of his actions and choices.

Meh, survival isn't 100% successful.

I think the main thing this should teach anyone is "don't be stupid" everyone avoids injuries even while taking short walks, it becomes even more important when you don't have a "safety net"

I enjoy the show as entertainment, but as we all know, playing football and watching football on TV is completely different.

That injury was endured during a charity expidition, and was in no way related to the show. Hopefully he recovers well, severing nerves is never a good thing.....:thumbdn:

I agree that Les Stroud exhibits more "survival" techniques rather than the "extreme" measures that Grylls goes to to demonstrate outlandish situations.

I prefer the advice given by Stroud, but I always feel guilty eating dinner or having some drinks during his show......I just lose my appetite with Grylls:barf:.

Hey, wasnt the Darwin award mentioned in this thread earlier? :D Anyway, I hope Bear wasnt injured too bad. His show is still far more entertaining than 99% of the crap thats on TV.

Btw, I hope no-one here thinks that e.g. Survivorman is beyond outside help in his show. Theres absolutely no way that any production company would take that kinda risk.

It's pretty unrealistic to expect a presenter to die on a TV show for verisimilitude. I also can't imagine a TV show allowing a presenter to cause his own death through such negligence solely for realism. Plus, if he did die for this reason, it would be put down to pig headed machismo and we'd deride him even more.
I'll completely agree that MVW shouldn't be advertised as survival, but rather as a daredevil escape and evasion show.
I still enjoy it's guilty pleasures though...

Gosh, I hope he makes a full recovery. Having received the same injury (only from a knife, not bamboo), I can appreciate the anxiety that comes with not knowing whether there will be permanent nerve damage.

I see this as a test, though. If Grylls heals up and moves on, I will continue to think of him as an adventurer / adrenaline junky.

If, on the other hand, he uses the opportunity to produce a short special on the many uses of 'natural sharp things', showcasing the versatility of razor-sharp bamboo shoots, then I will consider him a real survival specialist. :D

All the best,

- Mike

Sorry but as far as I know he wasn't in the regular SAS but the part time TA regiment. That is not the same thing. I had the misfortune to spend two weeks training with the TA SAS back in the 1970's. They were not impressive.
