Grylls vs Bamboo

you got to think that the tv show has invested a lot of money into him. They also probably have him insured for a lot. if he looses a finger or is hurt to were he cant do any more episodes they loose a lot of money. a lot of times its not really up to him. i dont think its fair to hold it against him for getting medical treatment. Im not saying his show is the greatest but you cant be upset with a guy for saving his finger.

Thanks for elaborating Lost Rover on something not many here in the USA are familiar with as far as what constitutes the SAS Service.

With enough money most anyone can go to Mt Everest also and 'climb the mountain'; as many shows have shown in past years. Not discrediting that Bear did it, just saying, it does not make him an 'outdoor expert' in the likes of Ray Mears, Nessmuk. Dare I mention Les Stroud in this company; whom I have MUCH more respect for the way he presents his material to the general public.

It's one thing to armchair quarterback a tv football game a WHOLE different deal to armchair QB one's LIFE in the Bush IMO/E.

To add; I would've thought they could provide medical treatment and continued the episode expounding on what to do in that situation. Ah, another 'teaching moment' lost, but it's only tv so what the heck....Dancing With the Stars is coming on soon!

bamboo can be vicious .
i've sliced the shit out of my fingers several times, ripping rhizomes out of the ground.
split Bamboo is as sharp as a razor.
i'd say Bear was stupid at best and dumb at least for screwing around with the stuff;):D

Due to my completely ruptured Achiles tendon, I've recently been forced to sit at home and . . . watch television  :o

I quickly discovered that daytime TV is even more nauseous than it is in the evening, and we don't have cable or satellite, so I managed to get hold of all of Bear's series to slow down the cabin fever. Despite reading about the guy here, I've never watched one of his shows before.

They are certainly entertaining, in a 'what's the idiot going to do next ' sort of way.

Seriously, I've quite enjoyed the ones I've watched so far but they really shouldn't be viewed as real survival advice for the most part. Great fun though!

I've got all of Ray Mears' stuff on the way next. Now I've seen some of his shows and he knows his stuff, so that should actually be educational instead of just entertaining.

Hope Bear gets his finger sorted out properly. At least we get to see some interesting places in his shows, with the benefit of a nutter trying to his best to almost kill himself in every episode. It's way better than re-runs of Neighbours!

And to wit, Bear is supposedly 'teaching' the 'rest of us' how to do things in the wild?! Rolleyes smiley <here<

Instead of the show/Bear pointing out the dangers of handling bamboo in the Bush; the show wisks him away on a helicopter to a hotel, ahen, I meant to say, hospital for care. It would've been much more inline to provide expedient field care....but then again those are only tv show emt's hanging out on the sidelines, not the real everyday working kind (insert more Rolleyes smiley <here<)!!

I worked on the set of LOST and they are genuine medics on the set from Sunrise to Sunset if the show is on set, no excuses. If someone gets as much as a paper cut they stop everything until aid is rendered. I actually think LOST may be a better show to watch than MVW for content, but then I'm biased...(insert Grin smiley<here<)

Maybe he cut it on the fine hotel silverware he was using after the daily airlift from the "hardcore" environment he was strugggling to "survive" in to the nice cozy hotel he actually stays in....

The problem is FoxyRicky that the general public has so many shows on tv, including 'survival' type shows, that it all becomes a blur and most folks can not distinguish the crap from reality! Hence my 'Dancing With the Stars' crack in a post above...Do yourself a favor and buy some DVDs from Flix here in the Gear For Sale forum...

Yeah, I quite agree. I watch it in the same way I might watch 'You've Been Framed' where people send in video clips of other people doing stupid stuff. It's obvious they are doing something stupid and it's just a case of waiting for the Darwen effect.

But you are correct; people watching Bear's shows, portrayed as survival, don't necessarily know the difference. Unless they hang out here of course. The stuff he gets up to could (possibly would) be deadly for anyone else.

They should be advertised as something else - 'Nutcase in a Jungle' perhaps.

He cut his finger down to the bone & needed to be flown all the way back to England? He could have gone to Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, Singapore, etc. for their skilled doctors and surgeons if he didn't trust (rightly so) Vietnam's medics.

I've cut my thumb down to the bone twice and I just held it with pressure until the bleeding stopped and then dressed it with tight bandaging.

I am really glad I stopped watching his show after season 1.

Dang CWL! Now why did'nt Bear think of that? Oh yeah, it's just a tv show for ratings; why educate the folks who are watching and thinking "that looks like fun this weekend!"?! I agree, the Southern Hemisphere is chock a block with qualified medical folks to address that wound. I realize it was severe, but still, Australia has some similiar food to England in it's fine hotels, I hear. I would'nt know though as I stick to the witchity grubs meself when in the Bush!

I wouldn't touch this thread with a bamboo pole....Unless it was a mistwalker sharpened spear bamboo pole :D

I don't have a problem with him flying back home for top-notch treatment...I have some nerve damage in my left hand from when it got blown apart by a chop saw a few years ago and if there was something I could do to avoid that I would, TV audience be damned.

What does bother me about this is that a survivor has to be CAREFUL to avoid getting hurt. Nobody who doesn't have access to emergency medicine can act the way he does on his show (as of course we all know)! So when he gets dinged up as a result of his lousy survival behaviour, it ought to be telling him, "man, this is really NOT an effective way to survive!"

It bothers me that he MUST know that what he is showing everyone is more likely to contribute to their early deaths than help save them, yet he keeps proffering his techniques as actual survival information, which they clearly are not.
