GSO 3.5 question

Just answered my own question about the ferro notch now that the Starter page has customization options listed. I haven't been there for a while. Really looking forward to the new 3.5 and 2.7!

You and hhmoore make some fair points. I just figured the bushcraft guys were already carrying SAK's, Opinels, or multi-tools which all have great striking surfaces. As far as the 3.5 goes, striking a ferro rod with the edge isn't going to hurt it any, but the ferro notch works amazing imo. Guess for the guys with larger firesteels the sharpened spine would be attractive.
But but but what if a bear takes your pack and sasquatch takes your pants and all you have is your knife and ferro rod and boxer briefs??? You'd die instantly!

Sorry if my question has been asked and answered to the point of annoyance - I don't follow this particular subforum, and I'm not gong looking on facebook. I happened to see the notice about the 12 in New Posts, which is the only reason I ended up here.
Unsubscribing, moving on.....
I really didn't mean to discourage you from being here. When you read every single thread like me sometimes you notice trends in questions.

Does the sharpened spine on the Starter 3.5s mean that the new models won't have a ferro notch option, as it will no longer be necessary?

Guy said in another thread that even though the spine will work he will still offer the ferro notch for improved capabilities.

Also interested in when last weeks 3.5's are going out. Excited to receive my first GSO!

The 3.5 page on Starter says (as you did in a recent post) that there are design changes to the 3.5. Any chance of getting a pic of the new design, or at least a modeling of it, posted there? I've been considering a 3.5; but every time I've caught them in stock, at least one of the options I select is unavailable.
My current thought is if I jump for the 12, I might as well get the 3.5...

Oh - I saw mention of much sharper 90 degree spines on the new production...any way to opt out of that?

As mentioned, the rendering for the new GSO-3.5 will be up in another day or two. The guy doing that for us had some machines go down in his shop so it's taking longer than anticipated to get those finished up. Alternatively, we have handles coming in tomorrow for the remaining older spec GSO-3.5 Factory 2nd blades. That would get it to you a bit faster and would negate any potential issues with the 90 degree spine, at least for the GSO-3.5. On that topic, the spines will be sharp enough to spark a ferro rod but they are not going to be like ice skates. The corners won't be so sharp that they are going to cut into your thumb. It will be akin to the SK-4 spines, Chiral and/or some others may be able to give you some more details about long term experience with those.

There were a lot of orders for those so it will take us a couple weeks to get them all built and sharpened. The first orders will start shipping out on Monday!

Sharp spines... I think this is a bit like the finger choil debate. There is no right or wrong answer, just some people like it and some people don't. Guy has been plagued with this for a long time because he wants to please everyone. He has come up with a good win-win with the new blade finish.

No worries about timing. I will be happy to get mine next week or in May. It is all good!

:D Nice
Guess mine's going out on Monday then, considering I was one of the very first

That is correct, they are currently skeletonized. When we begin new production, the future runs of GSO-3.5s will be solid tang and will have three handle bolts. Well, and you'll also notice some very distinct design changes from the current spec. ;)

Why going on a solid tang? Mine is well balanced as it is!

Unsure either but I feel more confident butt striking with a solid tang than skeletonized. I imagine not bothering cutting out extra holes will save on costs and more importantly production turn around. Maybe being from the oldschool I don't mind a bit more weight in a blade.

Seems like there are more GSO 3.5 Factory 2nd in stock now (with decent handle options)
Those of you who still haven't got one, why are you still here reading this??? go get one!

A week ago 3.5's were 20% off, (not Fac. 2nd's) glad I was able to purchase a 3.5 CPM-20CV as soon as they went up.

Guy, why the change from skeletonised to solid tang? Just curious, as I really like my GSO 3.5 exactly as it is.
