GSO 4.1 Mod Help

It's easier than you think... I did it to mine on a belt sander with some fine grit paper. The tumbling process rolls the edge a bit, but a couple of minutes is all it takes to get a sharp enough edge to throw sparks. On mine you can tell I did it from the wear marks, but I'm sure it can be cleaned up a bit with some finer grit and some love and attention. I don't think mine needs it so I left it.

Here's my post from when I received and started modding mine.

It really is a fine knife.

Ok update! Finished my mods

Here is the factory edge and spine pics.

First hit the spine with a belt sander 80 grit. Then worked on it with the DMT stones up to 1200 grit.

After I was happy enough with how the spine came out i started working on the edge. Here is my setup.

Use a marker to make sure you are getting the entire edge when you sharpen.

The finished product :)

And yes, it throws sparks.

Nice edge! Its always a bold decision to mod a knife that you love already. Add to it that its not easily replaceable and its even more ballsy! But when it works and turns out nice, you really have a tool that is tailored to you, basically a custom.

Good work bro!

Nicely done bud. Once the spine is given a nice edge I feel like that's pound for pound the best knife in that size and price range. The only downside is that the top surface of the knife doesn't have the same tumbled look as the rest of the blade. In this case, however, function heavily outweighs fashion. This knife will get heavy usage.

I appreciate all the support! It was really nerve racking at first and I wasn't so sure I did the right thing when that steel first touched the belt grinder lol. But I figured, oh well, too late to turn back now! End result was better then I expected. I love a convex edge and the one on this knife is pretty sweet, I actually cut a piece of hair longways with it for about a quarter of an inch before it broke. I tried taking a picture for you guys but the phone camera wouldn't focus on the hair :( well anyway. I'm happy. Thank you all again for the help.

Ok, I think I am finally satisfied. I feel like my GSO 4.1 is now the most versatile and efficient tool I own. I finished modding it for sure.... I think.

Edge was thinned out even further then the first time and now slices like a lazer. Love it.

Spine refined a bit more. Extra sharp now.

And finally, I read a thread the other day about how the bow drill divot should be a metal insert. Got me thinking, and this is what I came up with.

I used a metal electrical stove cover thingy I bought from home depot. I figured if that could stand up to the heat of an electrical stove then the heat generated by the friction of the bow drill should be no issue. I used some Wiss snips to cut out a small sorta circular piece. Then I made a mold of the divot hole using a high psi metal epoxy. Then, with a C clamp I used the mold to press the metal into the divot hole and sanded the edges down as flush as I could. Then a dab of gorilla impact tough super glue and I was all done. In retrospect I probably should have photo documented the entire process, but I honestly didn't think it was going to turn out as well as it did.

I think I'm finally happy with this project lol. I will do a review on youtube next.

Wow! You just burst on the scene and start up all these awesome mods. Nice work! Because the handles and sheaths are so good and you could order with notches or divots, there have not been the countless mod threads here like there are in some production knife forums. You rebel :D

You must have some real life crafting experience, is it a professional background or just a hobbie?

Lol. Silver, the only experience I have is my carpentry background from before I was a cop and that was limited. This is as much an adventure for me as anyone. I am just gettinh lucky I guess! :)

It's always great to get lucky.......... and it's also nice when projects turn out well ;)

I really like the mods. I need to get better with my stones and I'll get some diamonds. Out of my minimal blade knowledge and usage, a convex grind has always been my favorite.

What?!?!? No custom scales? No Custom Kydex? No Custom Fire Steel and Loop? No Custom drop loop.

No way you're finished modding that awesome blade. :D

Looks like my Buddies Silver, Texas, and Hard forgot about me...........

Oh you know we love ya ;)

You came to mind as well as Brian_T when I typed my earlier comment. There are some great mods featured here, but if you look at some other forums, it seems like most threads are mod threads!
