GSO 4.1 Mod Help

Lol no I hadn't forgotten. I still been searching. For some reason I couldn't order from shade tree. And my wood I want isn't just off the shelf.

What?!?!? No custom scales? No Custom Kydex? No Custom Fire Steel and Loop? No Custom drop loop.

No way you're finished modding that awesome blade. :D

Looks like my Buddies Silver, Texas, and Hard forgot about me...........

Hale That is some awesome work! I kinda like the scales that I have on the knife but that sheath and firsteel loop look amazing. I guess I'm not really done yet lol! I have to have a firesteel loop at the very least. Wish I knew how to work with Kydex.

I really like the mods. I need to get better with my stones and I'll get some diamonds. Out of my minimal blade knowledge and usage, a convex grind has always been my favorite.

Texas I have a couple of DMT stones but I use progressively smaller grits of silicon carbide sandpaper attached to a wooden stick to get my convex edges. It's actually a lot simpler then most people think. I just hold the knife in one hand and move the wooden stick with sandpaper in kind of a saw like circular motion across the edge with the other hand. As long as you can hold the knife steady it's pretty easy to get a consistent angle with the hand holding the sandpaper. As you push the sandpaper along the edge the angle changes slightly from tip to base and thats how the convex edge is formed. Its kind of like being consistently inconsistent, if that makes sense.
My setup is a 2 inch by 18 inch piece of wood. 2 pieces of thick leather of equal length and width as the wood glued to each side. 1 side of the leather loaded with CrO green compound and the other side a cut piece of sandpaper attached with rubber bands. Primitive but effective. The longer the "sharpening stick" is the more material you will remove with each pass. I start with 240 grit paper, 600, 1000, 2000, CrO compund. That should yeild a nice mirror polish. As along as you don't move up in grit before you have finished sanding away the cuts of the previous grit. You'll spend most of your time on the 240. After that everything else can be done within 15 minutes on a 4 inch blade. Shouldn't take more then 1/2 hour to 45 mins total. Practice on a cheap blade and I bet you'll be surprised at how easy it is. :)

Ok, I think I am finally satisfied. I feel like my GSO 4.1 is now the most versatile and efficient tool I own. I finished modding it for sure.... I think.

Edge was thinned out even further then the first time and now slices like a lazer. Love it.

Spine refined a bit more. Extra sharp now.

And finally, I read a thread the other day about how the bow drill divot should be a metal insert. Got me thinking, and this is what I came up with.

I used a metal electrical stove cover thingy I bought from home depot. I figured if that could stand up to the heat of an electrical stove then the heat generated by the friction of the bow drill should be no issue. I used some Wiss snips to cut out a small sorta circular piece. Then I made a mold of the divot hole using a high psi metal epoxy. Then, with a C clamp I used the mold to press the metal into the divot hole and sanded the edges down as flush as I could. Then a dab of gorilla impact tough super glue and I was all done. In retrospect I probably should have photo documented the entire process, but I honestly didn't think it was going to turn out as well as it did.

I think I'm finally happy with this project lol. I will do a review on youtube next.

That is awesome. I never would have thought of the stove part. Ingenius mind. I think I'll do one with a Mercury Dime I have. That should look cool.

Thank you. I do build custom kydex sheaths you know..........

Oh, and that edge work is beautiful. Really beautiful. Very nice work.
