GSO 4.7 review - Photo heavy and lengthy

Someone else who can confirm they have a set of the micro-textured scales needs to let me know which variety mine are, if that can be ascertained from the pics!

I am really curious as to whether these are textured. All I can say is that none of my canvas micarta looks like the scales on this 4.7. Although justin fournier pointed out in another thread that he believed the microtexturing to have come about because of the g10, not the micarta.

Ellie, are you able to confirm this?

I believe it all started with the G10 but Guy has it figured out for all of the handle materials. RSwanson's handles are micro-textured, if I remember correctly. You had mentioned an interest in a comment somewhere...? Since the natural canvas is one of the more common colors, we had a set already done to put on there.

RSwanson: Thanks for the review! I'm glad to see it didn't let you down during all that chopping. Side note: you mentioned to go with a saw... check out our gear section in a couple of days. :D

I just got my 4.7 in Today.. I got the monday 2nd. purchase a month ago..

YES.. it has the micro texturing! I have the red/black g10.. and with microtexturing and new 2016 handle design it is indescribably comfortable and form fitting.. feels like it was custom made to my hand which are on the large side..

The fit and finish of this knife with microtexturing just puts it in a league of godlike proportion. It's off the scale.. I remember when SK! were rough looking worktool.. now they are rough looking worktools with detail and fit/finish that put some busses to shame..

The "feel" of the new microtexturing is seductive.. it has a silky satin yet grippy feel that molds to your hand.. sorry for the weird metaphors, but best I could come up with it.. It's unlike any of my other knife scales.. There is no "grittyness" to it.. the microtextexturing has more of "satin" finish to it. There is no harshness or hotspots, it just feels like it becomes part of your hand and locks in..

MLM: so it was like a 3-4 week fulfillment period? P.S. is that the CFV steel?

Reading from Ellie's post, I am hoping that my Ghost Jade will also come with the micro texturing and if so, I can wait a couple of extra weeks :D

There was quite a teaser you had embedded in there Ellie. I "saw" what you did there ;-)

That is dead sexy! I ordered black/red G10 for my first GSO-6, glad I did, it looks awesome and hopefully it will be micro-textured for my pleasure too.

CO: I'm quite convinced that all handles for the preorders will have the micro texturing treatment and finish. JMHO!

Yes, I mentioned it on the Instagram post you threw up when announcing the textured grips. It was half a joke as I figured you would send them to long time fans but, hey, I'm honored!

Not only did the knife not let me down but it's sealed the deal for my one-knife solution for backpacks and camping. After a little more use around my yard and in the kitchen, I've meticulously examined the edge and it's almost entirely unblemished, which is sick considering how much cutting its done over the past week. You might notice one minor area of deformation showing as bright spots just near the point and maybe a half inch back, which I suspect came during baton cuts into dirt-caked ends of the sections I cut:

I purposely didn't clean the ends of the wood quarters, again to simulate a real-world task where maybe you're a little rushed due to weather, or careless, or maybe just can't be bothered to wipe everything down. There was plenty of mud and grit to chop through as many of the cuts were started. I was sure I'd see some real damage from all this since, as anyone who runs a saw knows, nothing will dull your cutters like dirty wood.

I'm also hoping all my knives come with with micro texture. The R&D set I received was outstanding. I mean the original finish is good, but this is better. And I am alll about better. Either way, I will be ordering some when they come up on the website for the knives I already have, and any that don't come with them.

Maybe as a suggestion S!K offers the option for purchases but it carries the disclaimer of an additional wait time.

It would end up being faster to just start doing them all. If we were to make it an option there is a lot of added time sorting through orders to figure out how many of each color get what done. That is part of why the ferro notch and bow drill divot are being phased out. The micro texturing will probably start getting phased in through the GSO-4.7 and GSO-2.7s, with the GSO-4.1s being mostly textured and any after that all being done. Just remember that word "probably" there, I make no promises.

Great info, Ellie. It makes sense. I'm glad you guys are thinking about economy in your manufacturing process and apply this kind of logic to your operation. Says a great deal about Survive! Knives.

Big thumbs up on the texturing. I wish my ESEE had the same treatment.

It is something we have really been trying to focus on. We have accepted that, at least for now, Guy is the limiting factor for production. So we are trying to do everything we can to make his workflow as efficient as possible. The number one concern is quality, so we are always going to be slower than many others. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can to improve.

Ellie, will the micro texturing be offered on all handle scale types? I am thinking about going with Linen on a GSO 10 I plan to preorder.

That looks awesome! I got the same configuration on my 3.5. Now seeing that I'm so glad I ordered it.

So would the bone linen on my 7/7 ,coming soon, be microtextured?
