Guaging interest in a Ferro Keychain Project.

I am not trying to sell any of my work here. I am gauging interest in a machining project. I want to see the interest in modifying a spy capsule to hold a ferro rod.

The idea would be to take a spy capsule a little over 1/2 inch in diameter by 2 inches long and add a 3/16th ferrocerium rod 2 inches long.

I made a mock up of one below.

Pricing would be 25 dollars shipped as seen below. A simple fob could be added in the choice of colors by the purchaser for 30 dollars shipped total.

Perhaps a simple wrist fob with a fixture that would wrap around the ferro sheath.

Here is the mock up:

Please let me know any feedback you might have - and let me know if you would be willing to purchase one at the prices mentioned above.

I have found a lazer etcher and a WFF / BF run might be possible in the future.

Again - I am NOT trying to sell these - but if I get enough interest - I will get a Gold account and sell them on this board.

I can add a simple 550 cord Lanyard (perhaps with a boatswain whistle knot and a fixture) to wrap around the base of a sheath holder or

Nice work and a great idea, but I don't know how many folks would spend $30 on it. I know ya gotta make money for you time and materials. Not trying to knock it at all. I just don't think I could spend that much on a ferro rod.

i am personally a component man, i like everything seperate. as such, i prefer to carry a rod on a lanyard with a spy capsule with PJCB sometimes, and it works well.

i have also done basically what you did there, but mine feels a little flimsy.

i personally wouldn't buy one, i am happy with what i have for now, but it seems like it would go over very well, and you could probably sell quite a few.

i would recommend you see about working a striker into the cap, like some i think you posted a while back. if you can get a good striker into the package there i think that would work great.

I agree with siguy, I like to keep things separate. I also think that the way people are watching their cash these days, $30 would be hard to get. With the economy the way it is, I`m watching my business getting ready to go under.

Understood - it is tough to justify selling something that takes time to machine, glue up, tie up, and ship for much less.

But perhaps it is the wrong time to do this project.

No problem - I have other things I could do.

Please - give me feedback if anyone else wants to chime in.

They look very nice bro. You have great skills machining!

Perhaps after the holidays it will be a better seller. I to prefer to keep some things seperate, however, this would be a cool neck knife addition.

Not so sure, but I will throw out another idea.

How about a spy capsule made out of ferreconium? Steel cap with built in striker and room for some tinder or other possibles inside?

Will there be any space inside the spy capsule handle for a bt of tinder? I was thinking of trying to make something like that.

Oh yes - that is the purpose - I bore out the bottom of the existing spy capsule (for some reason they leave 1/4 inch at the bottom - and then simply put the Ferro stick in the base. It would be water proof and have room for fatwood dust, a PJ soaked cotton ball - or what have you.

I am sure Doc would store a small photo pf Catherine Bell in there - you have to admit - he has good tastes!

Still nice to have very talented individuals on this forum that are always thinking and coming up with different ways to do something.

Naked - I am actually very glad you posted this. They can buy in such a volume that it makes it cheaper for them to make them. They are using a 2 dollar 'Scuba Diving' keychain and a 2 dollar stick. Of course, if you buy them 1,000 at a time - it costs about 1/2 that.

It would have cost about 7 dollars for me to make - minus shipping and time to machine and assemble.

It appears this has already been done. No biggie - I will just make a few for myself or my buddies - thanks.

Actually, I wouldn't. I had her on my desktop for a couple of days and I kept forgetting passwords! :o

BTW, that firesteel with the red and black lanyard is a beauty! In fact, I have one exactly like it. :D
