Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Morning Guardians, I hope everyone had a great weekend :) I've been inspired to carry my AC today ;) Have a good week folks

Prester John Prester John Vince, thanks for all the wonderful photos and memories of Linus and his visit to the Corpus Christi area. Your granddaughter is such a sweetheart! I hope I can show our friend Linus as good a visit as you did. As it turns out he’s going to get to spend some time in Tennessee and Washington DC since I have to make a trip help my daughter with a few things. :)

And I'll stop this nonsense about cutting back on beer!

Cutting...back...on beer...??? Now why would anyone go and do something like that...?? :D

There's only one on display now I'm afraid, plus a few truncheons, and only two trench clubs left in the WW1 section :(

uoYJaEz.jpg

Their not 'sanitizing' that place are they Jack? I mean the place is chocked to the rafters with stuff specifically designed to make a mess of people. If their going to get squeamish about it there won't be anything left to display.

Yes, they seem to have some historic rights, and I can't see them giving them up. I do recommend St Edmunds, perhaps it's even possible to view the 3 bibles by appointment. I also recommend the small museum in the modern visitors centre, and I think there may also be a small agricultural museum still there. The pubs have never been great I'm afraid :(

Thanks Jack, I am planning on popping back to that part of the world over the winter (if the trains allow for it of course). I went in three pubs; Nag's Head-a bit rubbish £3.80 a pint. The Cheshire Cheese-£3.80 a pint and the nicest of the three. And The Bulls Head; a Robinson's pub. Like a creche inside and £4 a pint! Of course it didn't help that it was the school hols; on my first climb up to Mam Tor about lunchtime on my way to Castleton, there was actually a queue to go up it.

Me too! I've still not been able to find anything definite. It came with a bag of tools my mate bought off an old feller, so I'm hoping we can spot him again, but it's possible he may not know himself o_O

What page did you originally show that on Jack? I'm going to show it to my brother; see if he has any ideas.

Terrible isn't it? o_O I got it about a month ago, and have had to put in a lot of work, and used almost every trick I know to get it to the point that with dry hands, and a mammoth effort, I can just pinch the blade open. No chance of using the nail-nick. The edge is so badly ground the blade is never going to be fully recoverable because it's ground way too high  Why would you make such a shoddy sample for a customer? o_O

I was talking about the Chestnut Roaster the other week, once a staple of British streets, but fast disappearing. I came across an old couple unloading their little roasting truck, they looked to be both in their 80's, and I can't see them wanting to do it much longer :(

That's a pity, as the covers look great.
If your after nice chestnuts there's dozens of chestnut trees just at Studley Royal, a stride out of Ripon.

I spent the night on the Lexington once, with a Boy Scout troop my sons were in. Lots of fun.
The half-marathon (13.1 miles) was my wife's first. There were plenty of faster runners, but she finished. She's only been running about 7 years. I'm proud of her. Maybe I should take up running!
Here's a couple of pics from the bridge someone else took:
CiGHarJ.jpg

Great shots there. Looks like a way to energetic way to spend a morning so well done to her.:D:thumbsup:

Thank you David !
i looked in Wikipedia and they belong to the same family "paridae"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tit_(bird)

TY Jack, it's a lot of fun and get's the family out for walks

Last friday we bought some chestnuts. It's my second time ever roasting them, just now out of the oven. :)
Sending you a virtual serving Harvey :)

A Paridae? Never heard of them actually but thanks for that.
Great shots of the Paridae feeding from your hand.:)

Fabulously frosty/cool, David!! :cool::cool::thumbsup:
Resplendent pic, David! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks GT. The weather guessers say it's heading back to cold in the next few days.
Great shot of your Cracker Jack there.

Great knives and a interesting book. From a previous post of yours I went looking for just what the heck a Slungshot was and found this video. I have always heard them called a Monkey fist even on the ship. Thanks to you, @Cambertree and this thread I now know better. :)

Waynorth on the levee.

Ahhh yip I've heard of a Monkey Fist. I'm sure I read somewhere that people would make one around a musket ball/small calibre cannon shot for a little extra oompf.
A nice sunny shot of the Waynorth there.

I didn't like oatmeal until I started adding fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts to it. Now I think it's nutritious AND delicious! ;):thumbsup:

I often put honey on my oatmeal. The local sort not the mass harvested stuff you get in supermarkets.

Any tips to make the peels come off easier ?

I thought it was plunge them into hot water? Or was it cold water? and I can't remember if it was before or after you cooked them?? But I think I'll try Jack's method.

Apple crumble yesterday.

Same rosewood today I think as well.
Hope everyone's week has started off smoothly.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Linus the Lambsfoot

htj7xBs.jpg

Final post: I had Linus packed up and ready to leave, but my wife asked me why? "We're going to the Island today!" My granddaughter was celebrating her first birthday at the other grandparents' house on Padre Island. In the following map, it is located where the blue dot is:
UEHK02z.png

So we drove over there this afternoon. Some pics from the drive (with help from wife and daughter):

We drove over to my son's house first to see some work done on it. His house is also on the island. Here's a look at the canal he lives on:

And we drove over to the beach to get a few pics. Behold the Gulf of Mexico!

You've been a great host, Vince. Thanks for taking us along.:thumbsup:

Glad you enjoyed them Dan, I would recommend splitting them nearly half way through, then closing the shell back together, and roasting until they are black or almost black on the outside. They should come out of the shells much easier than, and the inner peel will either stay in the shell, just flake off when you rub the chestnut between your fingers
Great TY, I will try that. We certainly roast more while they are in season:thumbsup:

Good job educating Linus, Vince.:thumbsup:

Haha... Great story. :cool::thumbsup:

Morning, Jack. Looks like you're ready to celebrate the weekend.:thumbsup:

Great costumes! That must have been fun.:thumbsup:
Thanks! It was a blast and they sure seemed to enjoy it.

Great Black Friday choice Ron :)

Morning Mark :) I think the word 'sneck' is mainly confined to Northern England and Scotland

Snecklifter.jpg

Great to see your Lambsfoot at work, and that's a great Halloween pic :D Hope you all had a fantastic time :)

Very nice indeed :)
Thanks, JAck. A great time was had by all.

Yesterday was the last day of the Month of The Wolf. I really enjoyed carrying Skoll for a whole month. I bonded well with him... I sanded the handle smooth to make him even more comfortable, got some good patina on the blade, and used him every chance I had. Now I won't be afraid to grab him in the future, in fact he might even be among the first ones I grab now. ;)

Last night was Halloween and the first one for us without any kids around. My wife and I celebrated Halloween by going out to dinner at our favorite Cheese steak shop. After that we went to the miniature golf course to have a little fun. They had the whole place decorated with scary stuff and playing scary Halloween music. Afterwards we stopped for some ice cream and headed home to watch Monday Night Football. A great night!

Today, I'm back carrying my Ebony WCLF...

Sounds like a fun time, John. Two great knives shown.

After seeing Chin's food pics, I was highly tempted to nip out for some of my favourite Vietnamese Pho, but I've stuff to do in the house unfortunately (Work, and that kind of thing!), so I'm just having a sandwich and an apple :) Hope everyone is having a good day

Nice pics, Jack. The bolsters and patina are coming along nicely. My HHB has a hard time taking pocket space from my Ironwood.

Ladies of the night! Haha
HAha!:thumbsup::)

Thanks, Mark! Stronger each day!:)

............
Another WONDERFUL shot, Mark! Great color in your Ironwood.:thumbsup:

Finally snapped a new photo today while going to the Drs...

Have a great weekend, all!!
Great to hear, Dennis. Thanks for the compliments.

Mornin' fellow lammie enthusiasts! Carrying my newly acquired JB '19 ironwood SFO. Still thinking about a name for him, and the one that keeps surfacing, I don't know why..., is "Two-Face" from the Batman series. But, this guy is no villain. I'll keep pondering... :)

Looking good! Very unique. I'm not much into naming my own knives, but your choices seem appropriate!

You're a good man, Jack. :D:thumbsup:

Thank you, Jack. :)

Amen! :cool::thumbsup:

They make life worth living. :D
Just don't over-do it.

Thank you, my friend. :)

Spinach on burgers. :cool::thumbsup:

Your picture deserves a :thumbsup:, Mark.
Thanks, John!

Congratulations to your missus Vince, and thanks again for the great tour :)

Very cool Dan  :)

Many thanks Mark, the same to you my friend, that's a great pic (well done) :) I don't know if you're aware of this? ;)

You too David, nice pic :)

I like the full-fat version of that myself ;) :)

Looking good John :)

Nice Ed

Hope everyone is having a relaxing Sunday :) I often don't go out on a Sunday, but today I headed into the city centre. There was a wee farmer's market on, so I checked that out, then went for coffee and a blueberry croissant :)

I was talking about the Chestnut Roaster the other week, once a staple of British streets, but fast disappearing. I came across an old couple unloading their little roasting truck, they looked to be both in their 80's, and I can't see them wanting to do it much longer :(

I headed on down to the river, and on to the Royal Armouries museum :)

After an hour or so at the museum, I was getting peckish, so it was off the pub for a burger and a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord. The burger seemed a bit diminutive, but was actually quite filling, as well as tasty :)

Hope everyone else is having a great Sunday
Haha, funny video, Jack! I had a bit of a hard time understanding them at times though.:D
Great pics, all of them, but what's the story on the beautiful black handled HHB?!:cool:

Guess it's a math guy thing! :D

And, finally:
Good Morning, Guardians!
This is Linus the Lambsfoot's last day here in Corpus Christi. I'll take a few more pics today and send him on his way tomorrow.
Another nice post, Vince!

................

Thanks, Mark. :)
Oops! I do have the problem of sometimes sounding kind of rude.

Impressive Big Iron, Ron!! :cool::thumbsup::cool:

Amazing difference between the two sides!:thumbsup::cool:
Are you familiar with Janus, the two-faced god from Roman mythology? :D

- GT

Thanks, GT. I wasn't familiar with Janus, so I looked it up. The pictures seems to indicate pretty much two of the same face, just facing 180 deg from each other. I'm wanting a name with striking contrast. :)

Looking good! Very unique. I'm not much into naming my own knives, but your choices seem appropriate!

Thanks, Mark. I wasn't into naming either until I started hanging out here. :D

Good morning! I think I'm going to name him Winston. :)

Thanks Jack! ;)

A lovely photo of your Ashley’s Choice Jack! They are special!:cool:

Oh! I forgot to post Big Rosie! ;) She’s going to be in the pocket today! Hope all you Guardians have a great day and a wonderful week! :D:thumbsup:

48753962632_6869062153_o_d.jpg

Thanks Ron, great to see Big Rosie

Their not 'sanitizing' that place are they Jack? I mean the place is chocked to the rafters with stuff specifically designed to make a mess of people. If their going to get squeamish about it there won't be anything left to display.

There definitely seems to an element of Disneyfication going on David. Their entire programme yesterday (and all this week I think) was entirely "Movie Monsters", no historical talks or displays at all :(

It's a nice walk over from Edale isn't it? I imagine you went via Rushup Edge, but you could always go via Hollins Cross to avoid the crowds, or miss Mam Tor altogether, and go straight down Winnats Pass or via the Treak Cliff cavern. I sometimes return via Hope for a bit of variation, quite a nice walk over the fields. Not that you'll necessarily avoid the queues though. The first time I walked over to Edale from Castleton I was about 10, on my own, midweek, during half-term, and there was barely a soul about (that was in the days when the Winnats was closed to traffic, and the A625 went right past the Treak-Cliff Cavern, before turning left to run under Mam Tor. The Peak District gets much busier these days, particularly the honey-pots

What page did you originally show that on Jack? I'm going to show it to my brother; see if he has any ideas.

Heaven knows David! Probably easier for me to re-post the pics, be interested to hear what your brother think

Yes, but with the work they're turning out at the moment, I'm glad I only asked for one, rather than ending up with a whole run of knives nobody can open, and sharpened by someone who'd be better employed sweeping the floor

Thanks for the tip on the chestnuts, I'm amazed chestnut trees aren't more common

I thought it was plunge them into hot water? Or was it cold water? and I can't remember if it was before or after you cooked them?? But I think I'll try Jack's method.

Nice work on that apple crumble my friend :) Mmmmm

You've been a great host, Vince. Thanks for taking us along.:thumbsup:

I'll second that if I may :)

Thank you Mark :) I was originally going to put a video of that whole sketch, but I was struggling to understand it myself! :D Hope your day isn't too tough my friend, that's a great pic of your 2019 Guardians Lambsfoot, and a cool corkscrew :)

Thanks, GT. I wasn't familiar with Janus, so I looked it up. The pictures seems to indicate pretty much two of the same face, just facing 180 deg from each other. I'm wanting a name with striking contrast. :)

@pertinux used to call her knives with contrasting covers 'Harlequin knives' Nice pic of your Hartshead Barlow

Hope everyone's day is going OK. My week is off to a great start as I took receipt of a fantastic package from the multi-talented CelloDan CelloDan :) Inside was a pile of literature about Dan's beautiful locale, a special bottle-opener, key-ring, and two absolutely incredible hand-turned bowls  Is there no end to the feller's talents? Many thanks Dan, the beautiful bowls will have pride of place in my humble home :)

Prester John Prester John - Vince, your adventures with Linus has been the best report of any traveling or hosted knife there has ever been on Blade Forums. let alone the Guardians thread. It wasn't only the pictures and tales you spun that made it so good but it was the direct and indirect participation of your family that put the icing on the cake. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
