Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

just because...

Dear friends and fellow Guardians,

When I started this thread, more than 4 years ago, I was on a mission to promote the Lambsfoot pattern, which only a few lucky folks here on The Porch were familiar with. I consider it a uniquely versatile knife, and wanted others to share that with me. This thread has only been part of that of course, but the Lambsfoot is now a well-known pattern here, with some even favouring it above blade-styles they grew up with. We have had our own knives, and the very first US production Lambsfoot. The past few years have been great ones for the Lambsfoot knife.

As this thread has progressed, it has grown into a nice circle of friends, and we have shared many discussions, as well as sharing photos and observations of our Lambsfoot knives. The atmosphere has always been very pleasant and cordial, and stood out, even on The Porch, in that respect.

Over the past few years, I’ve fallen into the habit of starting my day with commenting on the posts made while I am tucked up asleep in Yorkshire. August 11th was no different, and I commented on various posts, and posted photos of the Lambsfoot knife I was carrying. The post is here.

Among the posts I commented on were two by Randy Redden, who only posts in this thread very occasionally. Despite that, I’ve been friends with Randy since he first started posting on The Porch, and even when he’s been away, I’ve made an effort to keep in touch by PM and email, and by mail too. I’ve always made sure he was well-supplied with Lambsfoot knives, and If anyone wants to check our mutual posting history, I think they’ll find evidence of what I considered to be a solid friendship.

One of Randy’s photos, posted the previous day, contained a number of knives which weren’t Lambsfoot knives. Now at one time, I could rely on other Guardians to remind posters of their mistake, but they’ve sometimes received such an aggressive reaction, that I can hardly blame those folks for not wishing to say anything. I considered the matter a routine affair, easily resolved, and so posted the following:

“Nice to see your new camera in use Randy. Just Lambsfoot pics in this thread though please ”

This was followed by:

“That's a run of bad luck Randy, hope things are on the up and up for you now buddy :) Sounds like a good camera, I used to have an EOS myself back in the pre-digital days. Cool pic there  Good point, it's worth having a back-up at the moment. I have an Ipad Mini in addition to my PC, but I can't remember the last time I used it  "

Two days later, I was astonished, and very upset, to wake up to a lengthy post from Randy, which you can read here. While I think it actually has a very slim connection to my previous post, it clearly referenced it obliquely. While I addressed it directly here, apologizing for any upset caused, in retrospect I view that post as manipulative, dishonest, and classically passive-aggressive.

What followed was worse unfortunately, with my original post being misrepresented by another poster, who insulted me, and has continued to do so across other threads, while creating a false narrative in which I’m accused of shouting at Randy and driving him from The Porch! This is particularly egregious because this person has always been shown a great deal of kindness here, by myself and everyone else. I responded with a fact-based argument, which was ignored in favour of sniping across several threads. This unpleasantness has gone on for a fortnight now, and while the posts (the facts) are there for all to see, it’s easy for those who don’t visit the Guardians thread, and who are not familiar with what happens here, to believe the lies, or just see it as even-handed squabbling at best. Like the drunken old sot, sitting at the bus-stop, drunk on cheap cider, howling at the moon, or the senile old man embittered with the world, there are some individuals you just can’t have a civil debate with sadly, and with whom there is little point even arguing. Last night, I was subjected to a totally unprovoked, dishonest, and particularly insulting barrage in another thread.

This has been a great thread, with some tremendous discussion and debate, and I have been closer to many of you during these past few years, than I am to my own family. However, I’m not prepared to see it deteriorate into unpleasantness, and provide a platform for personal attacks. Nor to create more work for the moderators. So, it is with a great sense of sadness, and with apologies to my fellow Guardians, that I have decided to close this thread. Perhaps sometime in the future it can re-open, but for now I would encourage you to post in the Lounge. Thank you to all of you who have been part of this project, particularly those of you who’ve been here throughout. Please carry your Lambsfoot knives with pride and affection.

Your friend and fellow Guardian

Jack

Good Morning Guardians,

Once again I’m very sorry that it became necessary to close the thread. Thank you for all the supportive PMs and emails, and for the equally kind posts in the Lounge. I know, from what you’ve said, that the thread closure was a big loss for many of you. I have been overseeing this thread for over four years, and posted virtually every day of that time, so its absence was strange to me as well. I have to say, after all the unpleasantness leading up to my decision, I haven’t really felt like posting at all on The Porch, a place which has been a home to me for an even longer period.

I promised to reconsider re-opening the thread, and it certainly wasn’t an easy decision, even now I’m not sure I’ve made the right choice, but I’m going to see how it goes. I don’t have any say on who can post here, but I hope that the individual whose concerted disregard for the BF guidelines, the sub-forum guidelines, and the established rules here, caused me to have to close the thread, will have the decency to leave this thread alone from now on.

If you’ve not read post #1 in this thread before, or if it’s been a while since you did so, I’d be grateful if you went and read it. What I’ve written there is largely the same as the sub-forum guidelines, with the addition of my asking folks not to troll this thread with other patterns. In short, ‘Post a Lambsfoot. Be nice.’ I know that is perfectly acceptable to 99% of our regular posters. If you think you’re a special case, and you just come here to be rude and cause unpleasantness, please go and find something else to do with yourself. For everyone else, I hope the Guardians thread can return to the high standard which has characterised it for almost all of the past 4 years. If you’re new, I hope you’ll enjoy the posts here, and that you’ll consider joining the friendly community which we’ve formed. Let’s see your Lambsfoot knives Guardians

Jack Black Jack Black good to see the thread back open again. Even not (yet) owning a Lambsfoot knife I have been following the thread for months regularly and missed it.

Always people are showing their Lambsfoot knives in different circumstances often with a lot of information about daily activities and landscape pictures of those activities. Add to that a friendly banter between friends and participants always made it a joy to follow.

I hope we can maintain that and have the thread going uninterrupted for the foreseeable future.

I'm glad you've been enjoying the thread Gerd, and hope we can get back to normal :)

Hello fellow Guardians!
Morning Jack, missed you buddy! BF was not quite the same, for me, without this thread all week. Glad it's back and hope the drama can stay to a minimum, although you know how that usually goes.
Interesting pics from your weekend hike, looks like decent weather for you. We were up near 100 F on Sunday and supposed to be in the low 50's today!

I toted my 2019 Ironwood all last week and expect to again this week.
Stay safe out there.

It’s a bit early here at the moment (wrong 5 o’clock ;)), but I’ve got one more of these in the fridge, along with a few other Sam Smith’s stragglers. I think I’ll celebrate later.

I missed you too Mark! :) Hope you're doing OK my friend

That's quite a temperature variation! Here, it looks like our variable summer is over, and while the weather here on Saturday, when I had my hike, was generally good, it wasn't particularly warm, and rained for about an hour (I was near some woodland, and nipped in there for porridge and coffee, and a bit of slingshot practice). You can see the rain heading my way in this photo of a local reservoir.
