Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

I've been corresponding with Jack Black regarding some of the technical details of Sheffield knife making. I showed Jack a few photos of a knife I recently made and he suggested I show it here.

As I told Jack, the blade's a little too pointy to be considered a true Lambsfoot; but it's not a Wharncliffe either:

Thanks Alan, those are the old Sheffield trams. They ran until 1960, the year before I was born, but I have ridden on them in a museum (http://www.tramway.co.uk/), and the buses had the same livery when I was a kid. Sheffield has trams again now, but they're not double-deckers :thumbsup:

I've had the same problem with the emojis repeatedly :( I usually just type in the code, but the old code for the ':thumbsup:' no longer works :(

Thanks Alan :) Yeah, it was kind of wierd (and short-sighted) how they got rid of the trams, only to then reintroduce them, (with a huge amount of disruption), 40 years later! :rolleyes: ;) :thumbsup:

Us humans do some weird things, don't we Jack? We are building an"streetcar" that runs just a few blocks in DC. It's enormously disruptive and expensive.
On a knife topic, I was following the thread here about a blade that was almost, but not quite a lambsfoot. But also not really a wharncliffe either. I wonder what this blade would most likely be called? View media item 98

We certainly do my friend! :D I'm glad you brought the subject of that knife up again. Let's have another look at it, certainly a beautiful knife :)

It certainly isn't a Lambsfoot, and apart from the fact the spine and blade appear to be parallel, it has all the features of a Lambsfoot. I think it's a Sheepsfoot, but I'd certainly be happy to call it a Lambsfoot. What does everyone think about this one? Pretty special knife for sure :thumbsup:

Interestingly, I think my own Davison was actually commissioned as a Lambsfoot, but I'd say it's a Sheepsfoot for sure :thumbsup:

These look a lot like the Tackler pattern to my eyes.

Yes, I think Alan's does somewhat, but the Tackler blade is definitely a Sheepsfoot :thumbsup: What do you think about the JDWare knife?

Wright's current Tacklers seem to lean a bit more to the Wharncliff side of things than some makers had done in the past. The JDWare knife is quite a stunner! I am not sure if I would like a point on the back of the handle. One of the things that makes the Lambfoot type handle more comfortable for me is that having this area rounded fits well in the hollow of my palm when using the point to mark. It may just look pointier in the photo, however.

I commissioned my Davison as. Wharncliffe. It does have a curve from spine to point and a sharp point but looks a little wider through the profile than others I've seen and own. Definitely not a lamb though as you point out.

Sorry Bart, just re-reading my post, it's a bit stupid! :o Trying to do too many things at once! :D

Wharncliffe blades are commonly found on older Tackler knives, such as the Wheatley Brothers I've shown many times. While newer ones, like Wright's example, retain the rounded end, as indeed some Lambsfoot knives do, they don't sweep right to the rear like a Wharncliffe or Ettrick Knife. I certainly see what you mean. Please excuse me not posting pics, but I didn't want this thread to have too many non-Lambsfoot pics:thumbsup: Have to excuse myself I'm afraid, dinner is going cold :o :thumbsup:
