Indeed, dry is sly ;) ok, maybe I'm not that hip
BUT, I've only sharpened now with the stones dry and use
lighter fluid to clean the pores out, works VERY well by the way
and if need be, to resurface the stones, use a plate glass and
silicon carbide grit and some water to rub the stone on the flat plate
it gets the stone very clean and flattened out for you.

As to the edge on it now, it's a mix smooth/toothy kind of edge
and shaves effortlessly and can catch what I call tree top cutting
of the hair above the skin, if it were a little more toothier of course
it would catch a bit better but my sharpening goes from coarse
to medium, to fine india and then to ceramic and then leather strop
all which aid in getting a very sharp blade.

BUT, all the sharpening in the world doesn't help if the blade is like
a cold chisel, some knives will require to have the blade thinned down
and for such knives, I HIGHLY recommend sending it to the Tom Krein Spa
He can get your knives into an extremely sharp condition that will cut/slice!

here is the set I travel with, actually upgraded to a larger stone but same type;

and the silicon grit, you can get from a lapidary supply store;

I'm telling you, this little knife may well be THE one, it's just so very handy size
and opening mech, it's hard to beat, my only concern right now is how long
the opening mech part will stay together?? I've heard that one guy had it
fly apart but he put it back together with lock tite and all is now well ;)

Yes, dry is so much less messy! I use some simple cleaning detergent to clean out the pores of the fine India and also to clean my Spyderco ceramics. Usually I too go for a polished edge but at the moment I am playing with some knives that have only been sharpened on the fine India just to experience its strong and weak points.

I have ordered myself an OD-1 with black handle from the Pharmacy this morning :) Looking forward to receiving and using it. If the edge really is to thick I might send it out to have it thinned.

Nice bit of sharpening kit you have there! I see we have a similar taste in honing tools, now I only need to practise more to become as good as you are. Making them tree topping sharp is still a challenge!

Give that lighter fluid a try, it works surprisingly well !

and, that is just my travel kit, I use to have the large Tri-Hone set
from Norton but wanted something a little handier in size when I do
want to bring them along, so I got the 8" single stones and caskets
for each to set in, works great! Plus missing from that photo above
are some wedge type stones I just got from Norton, handy for recurve
blades to get into the arch, I have a new SAK with a hawkbill blade
and that does a nice job getting it sharpened up.

Good luck with the OD-1, the opening mech can become addicting ;)

I will look in to that lighter fluid.

A SAK with a hawksbill blade, wow! I have never seen that. Looking forward to your review. :D

I try to avoid blades with re-curves as most of my sharpening equipment does not work so well with them.

Looking forward to playing with the OD-1. Got the mail that it is on its way. I wonder how thick the edge will be. Thin edges are a bit of an obsession for me :D If it is to thick we will just have to fix it. Just more opportunities to improve my sharpening experience ;)

It's not too thick really, just could be slimmed down some, a slight convexing
at the shoulders of the bevel helps a lot, especially for push cutting purposes.
In the one image above where it shows the lock, you can see the edges of the
bevels, on a thinner knife, it would be, well, thinner there ;) but as I say it isn't
TOO thick, just could be thinner....

and the
SAK Pioneer Harvester

If I get some time, I may also do a brief review of that one as well.

Thanks TG, that's the look I was going for actually :)
and JDW, I hate waiting for stuff, it's like watching a pot of water boil, seems like forever!

Update on the knife, still my pocket favourite and in use, it's VERY versatile
in handle and blade shape, lovin' it ;)

I probably would like to see an upgrade of steel maybe, as I do need to touch it up
after a little use, but I do like to keep my knives as keen as possible too
so it's probably more me than the knife.

Opening mech still operates smoothly and locks up securely, although the flipper thingy
seems loose, I'll have to wait and see if it becomes TOO loose, hope it stays together
and I don't lose parts!

Otherwise, this may very well be the folder I've been looking for, yeah, I can see everyone
rolling their eyes ;) it's ok, I'm use to that! :)

Good to hear she server you well. :D

I woud not be suprised if the shock of the opening is slowly working the pivot lose. I had that happen on my Buck Vantage Avid due to all the flipping . A bit of the right glue and all is well. (Great knife by-the-way!)

JD

Using every day since getting this, it still opens smoothly and locks up solid
blade still has a decent edge as well, all in all, still a keeper! :)
