Guided sharpening systems angle consistency

I have the standard stones on my GATCO. I assume that they are comparable to the Lansky standard kit. The only two I have added are the extra fine and ultimate finishing hone from GATCO. The ultimate one is a ceramic.

Lansky also has a "Super Sapphire Polishing Hone" available.

If I was looking at the Lansky I would buy their Professional kit. That would get you the serrated hone and the ultra fine. I would then add the Super Saphire. Then I would see where that got me. Then I would look into stropping for a final step if desired.

I also have the standard Gatco Sharpening System which I also upgraded with a ultra fine and ultimate finish hone. And I've been sharpening my 942 in S30v and ZDP-189 Mini-cyclone with the Gatco and it sharpens these steels just like any steel(7-8 stroke on each side from course to ultra-fine or ultimate).
What I want to know if you had the same experiences with these and other super steels because I keep on hearing on this forum, those which are fans of the Spyderco Sharpmarker say "my ZDP-189,S30V knife is so hard to sharpen".
Another thing have you had any experience sharpening the ever popular recurve edged knives with this system.

I also have the gatco system and I prefer it to the lanskey system. I actually gave my lanskey away to a friend after trying and later purchasing the gatco.

for sharpening the recurve section use the serrated (triangular shaped hone in a sweeping motion and sharpen the remainder of the blade as normal. works great on my BM 710.

I am sorry I can not give you any feedback on those two situations. I do not have any recurves nor do I have any in anything other than plain Jane stainless.

I have only used the serrated hone once. I am planning on using it soon but on a long serrated bread knife.

I've used the Lansky system for many years. Right now I use the diamond hones and then maintain my blades with a leather strop charged with green compound. My knives edges are always hair popping sharp.

I have the Lansky system. It does get a blade sharp, but it's horrible to work with. It only really works on blades of around three inches. It only really works on softer steels, unless you've got a whole week with nothing to do. It only really works with larger angles - trying to put anything less that 15 deg and you will smack the stone against some part of the clamp. Every so often the clamp comes away from the blade, too.

I personally think sharpening should be meditation. Right now I mousemat. I have to say that, although I've improved here with experience, I still believe that all things being equal I can get a blade a tiny bit sharper with the Lansky. Which does not mean that I would use the Lansky, however.

I'm going to decide between wetstones and the Sharpmaker - one for the skill-for-life, the other for the instant touch-up of maintained blades. I would not recommend a Lansky, other than to say it is a good way of learning about angles and the basics of sharpening (count those strokes!).
