Guilt... selfish.

I’m cringing at the thought of having to make this decision. I only started into this madness a few months ago, but I did have a few SAKs for many years before that, one of which I carried every day. Most were gifted to me before I recently started buying a few more ‘serious’ knives. The ones that were gifts have sentimental value; the ones I bought myself, I bought because I like them for one reason or another … or several. I cannot imagine having to pick one to cull from the herd - it would be like picking a child to go live with another family. I would argue long and hard to do exactly what you did - buy one that I think the recipient would like and use. Glad you were able to get to that solution.

Well in her mind I have hundreds of knives and to give him something nice that he doesn't have or carry a knife.
She is now kinda under the impression all guys should carry knives.

I was afraid he wouldn't or couldn't sharpen m390... I don't think he would abuse it which really isn't a big concern.

I was just feeling selfish that I do have around a hundred knives and don't want to give one up lol.

He did invite me and a group of guys on a fishing trip for his birthday with a paid airbnb for the weekend. We get along pretty well.

Even as a knife snob, I really think a Rat 1 is a nice blade to have.

My Wife was the initiator on this one.
Because I do have alot of knives in most peoples point of view.

I would like to give him a nice knife that I enjoy but again... they are not easy to get and are rather expensive.

Tbh if given the choice I would get him a military as that's one of my favorites.

I'll go through with it one way or the other.
If he isn't a knife guy, giving him an expensive and hard to obtain knife is a waste. It will be unappreciated, and only hurt you when you see him abuse the knife or lose it.

Been there done that.

Give him something not super duper expensive if he isn't a huge knife guy.

Just my two pennies

*gives Shirogorov to BIL and says "Happy Birthday!"*

*BIL says "Thanks, I've been needing one of these for a long time!" then BIL promptly starts prying open 25 year old paint cans in garage just to see if the paint's still good in all of them

If he's a decent guy and you want to give him a knife, then give him one that he can handle - one that won't make you angry if he destroys it.

Hey guys... it's my brother in laws Birthday soon.... this week.
I was asked to give him one of my knives.

I didn't know what to do ! I bought them cause I liked them.
I thought well.... I'll give him a lionsteel that I carried twice

Its nice has micarta m390 steel light weight. I like it 👌 just don't carry it alot.

But.... I wanted to give a spyderco because that's my favorite. But I also don't want to give one away because I'll want a new one or is not made any longer.

Am I being stingy and selfish ? Idk

Just saw that it's your wife (your BIL's sister) who is making the request but . . .

If you don't want to give one of the knives in your collection to your BIL (or anyone else), DON'T! IMO, that's an unreasonable request.

Doesn't mean you can't (and shouldn't) give him something else, like buy another knife for him as a gift, which is what I'd do. If she doesn't like it, just make sure you get to keep your knives as a part of the divorce settlement. LOL! ;)

Since my brother in law often asks to borrow a bottle opener, I gave him a little Spyderco with a cap lifter. He looked at it like it's a pet rock or something and the damned thing hasn't seen the light of day since. Arschgeige.

Let my stepbrother choose from a pile of knives I had - for his B-day. Heh, he got an original Becker Knife & Tool BK7, that stung a little.

But I got to sharpen after he beat the new off of it. Man o man some nasty dings in that edge, but that was some good steel back then.

I would do it over, yes.

Rat 1 is a good choice - a top contender for budget folders.

How can one not be flippant in a story like this? If I were the OP, I'd slip the knife into his pocket, and ask him to stay happy with my sister for the next 50 years, or the next knife will go to his...

What would your BIL like? If he's not really into knives and/or has no appreciation for fine tools, don't waste your good stuff on him.
