Guilt... selfish.

S Skar , you chose well, giving him the Rat 1.
If he takes care of it, and appreciates it, maybe he will have the initiative to start his own collection.

Don’t overthink this. Smatchet is the answer.

Kidding aside, do you have any clue if this person has a particular taste or preference of knives? Yes, they all cut, but some guys prefer folders, others fixed, etc.

He doesn't carry, maybe that will change.
I really think he would be thankful and like about anything I give him.

He doesn't fit in the survivalist category.
But the Rat is one I'm pretty happy to have.
Pretty sure he would too.

Rat as in Ontario Rat? That’s a great first knife. 😀

🤨Unless the Wife is punishing you , she probably doesn't want you to be suffering mental anguish over this gifting .

Something like the Rat would be fine , I expect .

This was my favorite folder in my collection at the time, which I not only put time into modding but bought aftermarket scales for and even modded those. Then, I gave it away to a beloved friend. Ask me if I felt guilty or selfish for doing so.

ETA: To answer my rhetorical question: No I did not feel guilty or selfish. The feeling we get from making a personal sacrifice for the sake of another's joy is its own reward. And I have not done anywhere near enough of it, because in my life I have already been far too guilty and selfish.

That's the one :)

My AUS-8 Rat 1s have been wonderful performers.

I carry a Pelican 1450 in my truck that carries all my "unexpected overnighter" goodies...Large/Medium/Small knives, simple "first aid" stuff, pistol, small bottle of oil, extra magazines for my rifle/pistol, emergency blanket, etc...and those little RAT 1s have done their fair share of food and wood prep.

*I actually prefer the AUS-8 Rat 1s to the D2 stuff. Your mileage may vary.

I have given several people good knives, only for them to put them away or lose them and then ask me for a knife next time they needed one.

I have also given some that are appreciated and used.

I would suggest, if it has not been suggested yet, to gift a Victorinox or Swiza as these are generally more appreciated by non knife fans too. Or just a kitchen knife, as everybody uses kitchen knives.

I think that's a great knife to give. If you see they enjoy that, and their interest grows, you can give them better ones as time goes by
Maybe you’ll get a new knife buddy out of it. I think the Rat is a great choice.

Really nothing wrong with a Rat 1, it’s a good knife. Especially since you have a duplicate :)

First thing to consider when gifting him a knife....did he ever seem cross at you for sleeping with his sister? Take it from there.

That sounds like a Sophie's Choice dilemma. I have given away knives to members of my lady's family, but she would never ask me to do that. That would be like me wandering into her personal library and suggesting she give away 10 books I chose at random. If you're going to give your brother in law a knife it should be something you know he'll appreciate. If the Spyderco Military isn't considered expensive enough, toss in a bottle of whiskey. Sharp, pointy things and whiskey are a combination you can't go wrong with...
